Slow speeds with Gigahub on 3gb

I’ve currently upgraded from HH4000 1Gb to Gigahub 3gb and my wifi speeds are terrible.

I’ve already turned off wifi optimization and Wifi 6, along with different SSID names. Currently on firmware 1.14.1

how can I get the new 1.15x firmware @BellPatricia

More questions.. when I hardwire 3 devices to the ethernet ports and do a speed test at the same time I get close to my 3gb combined.. when I do a speed test via 5g wifi I get.

1 device 600mb

2 devices combined 600mb

Should I not get 600 ish each?

Are you experiencing slow Wi-Fi speeds all the time, or during a certain period of the day/night?
Which devices (make/model) are you using, and if this is affecting all of the wireless devices in your home?

Hi @BellNick thanks for replying. I have since been sent another Giga Hub currently running firmware 1.7.1.

I have 3 devices connected, 2 TV receivers and a 2020 MacBook Air M1. The computer is currently 6" away from the router and connected via 5ghz and I'm getting the following speeds on the router.

I'm unable to do a speed test on bells site atm getting an error

However when doing a test on Fast.com I get anywhere between 80 -750, I just got this at 10:40pm.

I was just told by the tech support that the maximum throughput of the 5ghz band is 1gb, so more devices I add will share that 1gb, is that true?.. if so there is no reason to ever get more than 1gb unless hardwired or using 6e..

I did try the virtual repair tool, 1st I got an error on the 1st test, but then ran again and it was gone. I truly miss my Non HH4000... I should never of upgraded..

Just did a speed test on my 2020 iPad Pro.

You are correct. No wireless device in the real world will get speeds above 1 Gb. The speeds you report on your wireless devices are expected for a wireless connection. OTOH, a single wired connection from modem to a computer from the 10 Gb port on the modem to a 10 Gb network card will max out just above your maximum service speed. In my case that's 3Gb/3Gb. Yours may differ. As you add wireless devices, the signal is divided and redivided. The same is true on a wired service if you introduce an unmanaged switch, which divides the connection. You really don't see much difference at each device, though.

So are you telling me that the HH4000 on 5g is only able to provide a maximum throughput of 1gb.. So if a device manges to perform at the max I would see the following:

1 device - 1gb

2 devices - 500 each

4 devices 250 each and so ...

if so, the purpose of increasing to 3gb unless all wired is stupid.

Also how do I go about getting the new firmware as I'm on 1.7.1

Each subscriber is free to make choices. 3Gb is the most I can get on a wired connection, at least on my profile. I see it when I download a video card driver, which is on the order of 800 mb in size and arrives in less than five seconds. Same with Windows or iOS system upgrades. I do a lot of video conferencing and similar broadcasting, so I have noticed a huge difference from my former 10Mb/.9Mb DSL connection. On wireless, the best speed test I see, according to the Wi-Fi app, is about 735Mb/735Mb about a foot from the Giga Home modem. As expected, that drops the further I get from the modem. as well if there are floors and walls for the signal to penetrate, that can affect signal quality. The slowest I find on wireless is on the third repeater pod from the modem when the speed drops to 40Mb/40Mb. But I can still stream video very well.

I try to remember that internet speed itself is intermittent and variable, not a constant. I don't see that variation because of the nature of the technology.

With respect to the latest modem firmware, that is an appropriate question for Bell forum moderators to answer.

A good question but a very difficult question to answer. It depends on the connecting device, the wireless protocol it uses to connect to the modem and the distance from the device to the modem, among many other things. My iPhone 11, for example, placed 3 feet from the Giga Hub, does 677/716 Mbps up/down on a speed test. Given that is close to the device maximum of 877 Mbps, according to Apple's specifications, that's acceptable. If I move to another floor, the speed drops in relation to my distance from the modem. Wireless speed is subject to so many variables that it is impossible to give you a definitive, absolute answer. Nor is speed consistent. The connection actually speeds up and slows down, something you don't normally notice. That's why internet providers, including Bell, always use the phrase "up to.." when to when they talk about speed. The only way to ensure a constant, maximum speed of a connection to the internet is to used a wired connection. And even that is subject to many other variables. And that's why I said, "It depends".

Thanks @dks but my question is more related to more than 1 device.. I know my device will not go over 700 -900 gbs.. But i want to know.

I pay for 3gb.. Network to Modem Speeds are 3205Mbs.

Connected via wifi. Device 1 connects and gets 800mbs, when device 2 connects if is capable of getting 700 - 900 will it get that kind of speed so the throughput on the WAN connection would be 1500 - 1700 or would the speed that device is 1 getting be halved so 800 is shared between the 2.

This is what I’m seeing currently, the speeds of device 1 is just cut when more devices comes on.

However in wired connected devices I can connect 3 devices and run a speed test and each gets 1gb so total 3gbs throughput.

Speed is never cumulative in a wireless connection. As you have found, a wired connection divides speed using an unmanaged switch. On the other hand, that is not how wireless devices work. Each device connects individually at the maximum speed it is capable of. Device 1 may connect at 750 Mbps while Device 2, which is further away, may connect at 400 Mbps. Unlike a wired connection the speed is not added together but separate, individual and on a per device basis.

I have no idea what the total number of wireless devices the Giga Hub can handle, but I have 23 devices connected of which only two are wired. There are many more variables in a wireless connection, unlike a wired connection, so any kind of absolute speed prediction is very difficult.

Thanks @dks I guess ultimately i want to understand if I will ever see more than 1gb of throughput via wifi when I have multiple devices connected.. Currently it seems that i can only get approx 1gb.

Will you ever see more than 1 Gb throughput via wi-fi with multiple devices connected? I believe that is unlikely, given the many variables such as individual device capability. You seem to have the fastest speeds possible. Perhaps, more will be possible in the future, but then one has to ask, "For what purpose?" If you need more speed, then wireless may not be your best solution. If you need to have dozens or hundreds (an exaggeration, I know) of devices connected, then you may need a different connection solution than wireless.

Does this mean on the 5GHZ band it can transmit a maximum of 2402Mbps?

Ah. You found that tab. Yes, that's the maximum theoretical speed. That does not mean you will ever achieve that speed. In reality, it's unlikely for many reasons, as I have said before.

Poor speeds and connection on Gigahub F/W: 1.13

I currently have the Gigahub with a 3 gigabit connection and the speeds have been underwhelming and the connection drops often. I have been reading that some firmware updates have helped and given that my current firmware version is 1.13, I believe an upgrade to 1.15 would potentially help. How do I go about updating the firmware?

Hi @gelton44 , did you manage to get the firmware update pushed to you?, I have 1.15.2 and that still has not proved to be good. I also got 2 Wifi pods from bell that are hardwired in, when doing speed test with 1 device connected to each of the pods and hub I still only max out to about 1.6gbs total of the 3 devices, still better than the 700mbs I was getting with the HH4000 only. The only way I can get some stupid speeds is hardwired with a 2.5gb card.. Starting to think about downgrading to 1.5gb and using my own Linksys Velop mesh, the Bell Wifi seems to be unreliable.

That all makes sense. As I said above, wireless speed is not cumulative (you can't add it together) but is completely dependent on the speed of your individual wireless devices. My iPhone 11 maxes out at 750 Mbps down/up when it is 1m from the Giga Hub modem. When using the pods, speed decreases. For example, speeds on devices connected to my furthest pod, not hardwired, are about 70Mbps down/up. It is still very reliable. It also takes 24 hours after making changes for the network to settle and figure out it's most efficient configuration. This is true of all mesh networks, I believe.

With respect to hardwired connections on the Giga Hub, again you are correct. The limiting factor is the speed of the modem port on the Giga Hub (there is only one 10 Gb port; the other 4 are all 1 Gb ports) and the speed of the network card or port on your computer. If you have the 3 Gb down/up service and your network card is only 2.5 Gb, the maximum speed you can achieve is 2.5 Gb down/up. In order to maximize your speed on your hardwired computer you would have to install a 10 Gb network card and use a Cat6 or Cat6E network cable between the modem and the computer. If you use one of the four 1 Gb down/up ports, you will achieve a real world maximum of about 940 Gb down/up.

Not knowing the rest of your setup, it does sound like you have maximized your speeds, however.

Firmware 1.16 issues

I was on firmware 1.15.2 and for the last 2 days was experiencing terrible download speeds, I contacted Bell Support yesterday and after looking at my logs realized the support updated me to firmware 1.16. Well I wish I could say things are better, my wifi is all over the place and my 2.5gb connect to the 10gb port is very slow.

I hate the GigaHub HH4000.

I just tried another speed test by moving the cable from the 10g port to the Lan port and got much better results.. I think the firmware or the 10g port is defective.
