How can I get full 8 Gbs speed using HH4000 using PPPOE?

I've been using Bell's latest 8Gbs internet service as a promotion offered in my area almost 2 years ago. Definitely overkill but the promotion was too good to pass up.

As I was investigating an unrelated Asus router's AiMesh network issues, Asus asked me to do a sanity check to verify speeds from HH4000 to Asus' latest gaming router and I found I was getting half of the speeds I've been paying for almost 2 years for! After further investigation, found it was unrelated to Asus hardware.

After the Asus AiMesh issue was fully resolved, I'm now left with this internet speed issue of never getting full 8Gbs.

Some important details:

All firmware is latest on all devices
HH4000 (connected 10g port) to (CAT8 cable) to Asus BE98 Pro (connected 10g port)
HH4000 onboard Speedtest (~8Gbs speeds) and Asus BE98 Pro onboard Speedtest (~4Gbs speeds)
Nothing else is connected to the router when performing the speed test. Just 1:1, HH4000:Asus router
Sanity check: HH4000 (connected 10g port) to (CAT8 cable) to Sonnet Echo Express (connected 10g port) to (Thunderbolt 3) to HP 360 laptop (Thunderbolt)
HH4000 onboard Speedtest (~8Gbs speeds) and HP laptop Speedtest (~4Gbs speeds)
After escalating the issue, Bell Level 2 put my residential HH4000 into bridge mode (as I heard this would help remedy the PPPoE overhead) but didn't make any improvements to the internet speed

Has anyone found a way to get FULL 3Gbs/8Gbs speeds from HH4000 to 3rd party router or found a workaround or is this a known Bell/PPPoE limitation?

If not, why does Bell offer 8Gbs residential service if they know that their users would never reach these posted speeds?

If the onboard speed test shows 8/8 then the profile is correct.

That leaves the 10G port. Going by half the speed based on your description, it sounds like it's possibly operating in half duplex mode.

Also, when talking about PPPOE are you talking about using PPPOE on the Asus router, or are you talking about PPPOE in the home hub 4000? If you are establishing your own PPPOE connection using your B1 username and password on the ASUS, your limitation is due to the ASUS not having the processing power for a PPPOE connection at 8/8. This is very common with consumer equipment.

And then I would also check the capabilities of the speed test location, as they could be limited to 4 Gbps although unlikely still possible

So I should clarify some items:

Prior to putting into bridge mode, I updated the 10g port to FULL Duplex/10g with the same results where Ethernet speeds were reduced by half.
With the help of Bell's Level 2 tech support, performed another test where they reduced my service to 5Gbs and unsurprisingly found the speed test was reduced to half and only have ~2.5Gbs. When it returned back to 8Gbs, reduced to ~4Gbs and again, 3Gbs halved to ~1.5Gbs.
Asus and Bell support, could not configure in any manner to get any speeds beyond 4Gbs which is why I had read putting into bridge mode (which is typically reserved for business clients) would help as the PPPoE service had such overhead and bridge mode would be a straight passthrough (I'll find the link) but alas, the exact same results
Here is example of an <older model> Asus router using their own ISP fiber service that was able to process 8Gbs, where I have Asus' latest gaming router and can't get 8/8 (https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/s/UTzKtW4aXA) so it's clear that Asus routers are capable of processing and testing these speeds
When Rogers was my ISP, I've never experienced this symptom or halving speeds from modem --> Asus router when testing using Asus' onbaord speed test (again, confirming Asus is not the culprit).

Forgive me as I'm fairly technical but not an expert in networking.

Is there another way to connect to HH4000 to obtain the full 8/8 connection? Asus and Sonnet multigig adapter (using TB3) seem to have the capabilities which points to Bell's device/software.

After canvassing Bell forums I realize that this halving is a common problem with using PPPoE to make the connection to HH4000. So is there another way to get the 8/8 connection using HH4000? Bridge mode doesn't seem to resolve this

So going by that, I am going to say you are establishing a PPPOE connection using your B1 username and password with the Asus router.

I would simplify this and simply use the 10G port of the home hub 4000 in regular DHCP mode. It should provide 8/8 speeds. If you have a PC with a 10G port you can connect directly and it should provide 8/8 connectivity (DHCP).

There's no true bridge mode possible because of the PPPOE connectivity. Unless you are with Bell Aliant, as they do not use PPPOE.

That was the test with the Sonnet multigig adapter (Asus router out) and same results:

HH4000 10g port (DHCP) --> Sonnet adapter 10g port (no b1 connection) --> TB3 --> HP laptop (TB3 port) = same ~4Gbs speed test (from 3 different sites)

* also performed these same tests using Alienware gaming laptop instead of HP laptop = same results

* also swapped HH4000 for a new one = same results

If it's showing 10g connection light pattern instead of <10g light pattern then it's safe to assume Sonnet is in fact making a 10g connection?

Would there be another way to test if the lights are showing up as 10g connection that I'm getting 8Gbs other than using TB3 (I've also used TB4 cable) --> laptop?

10G ethernet network card is the easiest way to verify connectivity when directly linked to the 10G port on the home hub.

Alternatively using the Asus router and connecting directly to the 10G port of the home hub and using DHCP instead of PPPOE should also show 8/8 speeds.

I just remembered that I also bought TP Link's latest BE985 Mesh routers (with 10g port) thinking it was the Asus routers but again = same 8Gbs halving (~4Gbs speed) using their onboard speed test app + laptop connecting to other 10g port = all same results

it shouldnt do this at all, i have a 3gbps line from bell, and run it through the 10GB port to an opnsense router via a 10gbps card, and then out on a out on a SFP+ card to my switch. no speed loss to anything in the house, save my wifi which i limit to 1gbps as its just my phone and tv streaming on it.

make sure your DMZ settings are proper in the HH, this can cause a halving issue.

also seperate your router onto its own IP range and disable DHCP on the HH or it will interfere and cause halving.

as an example, bell's modems are typically 192.168.2.1, so use something like 192.168.1.1 as your routers internal ip for example do not mirror thier internal ip or it can break it like this aswell.

PPPoE speed limit less than 1GB, even though my speed 3 GB up/down. Issue started after switching account (Same speed). Before with giga hub modem, now with giga hub 2.0 modem.

Before I get 2.5 - 3 GB... now, less than 1 GB.. all I change b1# and password.

Already called support few time with no luck... devices connected with 10G.

If anyone has any ideas.

I wanted to add my issues here as well. I am on the 3/3 gbps plan and I have the Giga Modem. I have tested so many different settings. I tried PPPoE pass through and found my connection capped around 400-500mbps. From what I have read this is because the Giga model keeps its own PPPoE connection to Bell and allows you to authenticate again as a second PPPoE session and it gets limited for some reason.

Second i tested setting the Giga into Advanced DMZ mode and I was able to finally get the full 3 gbps but my internet connectin was not stable. DHCP reservations were like 10 minutes and Bell ignored my UX7 attempt to renew the IP address and eventually lost it and had to ask for a new one. So the DHCP server would respond to I need an IP address but not the 1/2 way through the lease i want to renew this. This caused my connection to go down for about 15 seconds every 10 minutes which was annoying as hell when streaming movies or video conferencing.

I then begged Bell to put my modem in Bridge mode and I was told this is for business only any I said fine if Bell cant do this like every other ISP can Im leaving and going to Rogers because I have no other choice I want to use my own hardware. A level 2 tech supervisor decided to turn it on for me. I had my UX7 log in use PPPoE and the b1 user and password form the bell site and i am getting the same speeds as i was in PPPoE pass through mode. I was worried that my UX7 didnt have the power to maybe handle that but that was not the case I took my windows laptop and connect using PPPoE to the Hub 10GB port and still got the same speeds so this is a bell limitation not anything else.

This really ticks me off with Bell doing this. We pay for these speeds we should get them but they have some kind of limitation on their side when you use your own hard ware. I can double NAT and get the speeds needed but being double NATed is a pain to manage and I DONT want Bell handling my traffic as they cannot be trusted!

Thank you for your comments. You have described the issues in using PPPoE passthrough and your own router well. Bell does not offer bridge mode on residential service using the Giga Hub. If you are not happy with the speed you are getting, the only option you have is to purchase a separate Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and a media converter and plug that into your router. None of that is supported by Bell, however. There is a lot of information out on the internet about this.

Why is it that Bell has such an issue with people running their own hardware behind their ONT.. WHY would Bell limit or make it hard to do this? The Giga Modem IS AN ONT and Media converter already it makes no sense to not use it.. I have been on the phone for hours with Bell trying to find the reason for this.. WHY on a 3000mbps connection do I only get 400 mbps SOMETHING is a bottle neck and it is NOT my equipment. My Unify equipment is 100% capable of handling this. I DO have my residential Giga modem in bridge mode as a very kind Bell Supervisor in Tier 2 enabled it for me to test and see if this is the issue and I can see on the status screen it says its in bridge mode. But my UX7 is at 20-30% CPU when doing a 400mbps speed test so it is not the bottle neck here and when i setup the Advanced DMZ I could get great speeds like 2500 gbps but Bell was screwing up the DHCP leases and causing my network to go down every 5-10 minutes for ~10 seconds.

Does Bell have absolutely no clue what they are doing here, every other ISP can do this but Bell cannot for some reason. Someone at Bell has created this restriction for some reason and no one is explaining why. I have a Giga Hub 2.0 coming to me to see if that makes any difference but Bell is going to loose me as a customer if they cannot figure out how to give me the speeds I pay for. I love Bell and their network is rock solid but I DO NOT appreciate that anyone form their teams can look at my SSID and wifi password and could give that to ANYONE for any Reason.. OR give a user the ability to OPT out of Bells ability to see inside the modem without consent. I have to push a button on my router to allow Bell in not just anyone can access this without permission.. Anyways I am not apposed to getting a Dream Router 7 so i can do the ONT myself in that device. I just really wish Bell would give us a good reason why I cannot run my own equipment behind an internet connection I PAY FOR

Bell is so frustrating right now!

The core of your question, "Why does Bell still use PPPoE?" was answered comprehensively several years ago on Reddit. If you Google that question, the answer will be right there in the thread, "Please help me understand PPPoE". The thread also explains why Bell Aliant does not use PPPoE.

The answer in one word is "history". And in three words, "Sympatico Access Manager". If you ever used that software, you are, like me, older than dirt.

While there are currently issues with PPPOE passthrough affecting speeds, I doubt the UX7 would be able to handle 3/3 Gbps PPPOE connectivity.

I tried an UMD Pro SE with a GPON directly and it struggled at 1.5/1 PPPOE. It all depends on the resources available and the individual configuration, number of connected devises etc...

You would have to try it once the issues with PPPOE have been resolved. I still think it will struggle based on my experience with a more advanced Ubiquiti product than the UX7.

It's likely the main reason why they do not support equipment besides their own supplied units, as PPPOE will cause a large amount of overhead.

No I 100% get that.. IMO the Giga Modem needs to be the ONT and Media converter and do all the PPPoE for the users.. It's quite literally designed to do that! That's what I was trying to do with the Advanced DMZ and could get full speed but DHCP was doing something really weird! I kept only getting 10 minute leases from Bell for my IP address. I am not sure if that is normal or not but was causing all kinds of issues
