It's recommended so you can have a feature called band steering for devices who can use 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz bands.

Band steering will automatically move devices between 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands based on the congestion of each band. While 5 Ghz band allows for much faster connection than the 2.4 Ghz band, if it's congested you might get better speeds on the 2.4 Ghz band as opposed to the (congested) 5 Ghz band.

2.4 Ghz is more designed to generate wider coverage, while 5 Ghz has less coverage but is designed for faster speed.

Without the same SSID for both bands, band steering is not directly possible.

I have been using dual-band wireless USB adapter for years.

I decided to upgrade to 802.11ac adapter. (Wifi5)

My Home Hub was set up withe same SSID for both 2,4 and 5,0 GHz channels.

I began experiencing intermittent disconnects. After multiple trials and errors and purchasing

two different manufacturer 802ac adapters I finally decided to try changing the SSID to 2 names.

One for 2.4 and the other for 5.0

I am now connecting with 5.0 SSID and disconnects have not recurred

I am not certain that what I did was the right solution and whether there were other options.

Why does Home Hub 3000 guide recommend same SSID for the two channels?

I played around with the setting between 2 ssid and 1 ssid. When I switched back to 1 SSID the problem got resolved.

I learned something new "Band steering" !

If only we could disable N protocol and only run AC protocol… ac offers faster speeds and more connections on 5ghz than does N but the ability to disable the N or more specifically run ac only on the hub 3000 was disabled by bell
