Do I need a Bell modem for Fibe home phone?

I cancelled my Bell internet service today. I was told I must keep the Bell 3000 modem for phone. Is this True?Seems strange if I cancelled internet service. Also, if this is true, is there a smaller device that can be ordered for phone?

Hey @ptxyz123. Thanks for reaching out to the Community. That is a great question.

It sounds as though you likely have a Fibe to the home (FTTH) set up. If that's the case, then yes a modem is required.

Have a nice day.

Update: It didn't make sense to me to be told to keep the Bell 3000 router since I'm going with Virgin Internet. So I contacted a Sympatico tech line and was told when Virgin comes next week they will bring the Virgin router and replace my Bell 3000 router with the Virgin router which technically is very similar. Bell will actually be installing it anyway. Thus, I'll be using a Virgin router with my Virgin internet - this makes infinitely more sense.

If your home phone provider is Bell you will need to keep your Bell modem.....a lot of the home phones are using voip now so you need a modem.

Why do I need a router for my home phone. It's a landline. A router is only supposed to be for internet connectivity. What am I supposed to do with two routers? Maybe I should transfer my landline service over to Virgin as well and cancel my Bell account all together.

Besides, I have told Bell to cancel my internet service on the day Virgin installs their router. If I still need internet service for my bell phone service this completely defeats the purpose of switching my internet service to Virgin! Can I not use the a router simply for internet service and use my land line without a router?

If your home phone is using voip technology it means your phone is using the internet to make calls. If you dont have a bell modem than you dont have Bell internet than you dont have bell home phone. Its not the old copper phone lines we all had back in the days. You dont have to pay for internet but you need the modem to operate the phone.

Its the same for TV.....bell fibe tv uses the internet to provide tv service so without a bell modem and bell internet you cant have bell tv. You dont have to subscribe and pay for bell internet services but you need the modem for the tv services to function.

Another thing you have to check for is if you are able to have 2 internet lines coming into your home (1 for virgin internet and the other for Bell home phone). If Virgin uses the the line that Bell is using now to bring internet service to your home than your bell modem wont have internet access which means you Bell home phone wont work.

No. You do not need to change your Internet service to Bell. You can remain with Rogers on cable.

A Bell modem will be installed when your service is changed over from copper to Bell Fibe Home Phone.

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

I do not completely understand your question. Can you provide further details?

There may no jacks or wiring installed in your new home.

Are you on copper or fibre? Bell has not provided jacks in many years. Bell can provide you with this installation service for a fee.

If jacks are installed in your current location, they can be anywhere. The most common places would have been in the kitchen, den, family room & bedrooms.

If you are looking for jacks that are connected to Bell Home on fibre, there may be jacks installed but necessarily connected to fibre and the Bell Home Hub.

If you would like Bell to connect your Home phone service & install jacks, you will need to contact Bell Home phone customer service to arrange for a technician visit.

I have attached a link on Bell’s current one-time fees.

Bell's Current One-time fees

What are Bell's current one-time fees?

Please call Bell if you wish for them to provide this service for you.

Take care.
