More now than ever, technology has helped all of us connect with loved ones and the things we love. However, with our increased level of reliance on these technologies, we are more vulnerable than ever to cyber security threats.
1. Keep all devices locked and secure
One of the simplest way to keep your information safe is to lock your device when not in use. Whether a computer, tablet or smartphone; make sure that when you are not physically in front of your device or actively using it, make sure it is locked and password or passcode protected.
2. Keep your software and browser up to date.
Most major software companies use updates to ensure they keep software safe from potential vulnerabilities. By keeping your software up to date, you are also helping keep your devices and information secure from hackers and spammers.
3. Use strong passwords and change them frequently
One of the most efficient way to keep your information safe from potential hacks and identity theft is to use a strong password. A good trick to create a strong password is to use a pass phrase. To make your password even more secure, you should always use random capitalization, numbers and special characters. Also, when available, use biometric login options. This ensures that only you can unlock your device or log into an app or software.
Avoid using the same password/passcode for multiple applications and logins. This prevents ‘credential stuffing’ that can occur if even one of your logins or passwords were to be compromised.
4. Be careful with suspicious text messages
Hackers often use text message spam in an attempt to access personal information from unsuspecting victims. Always remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited suspicious text messages from unknown sources. Most companies will never ask for your personal information by text message. If you receive a text message and are unsure if the source is legitimate; do not open, delete the message immediately, and contact the company yourself to confirm.
It is important that you never open attachments or click links from an unsolicited suspicious text message.
5. Use firewall and antivirus software
