Why a device may not always connect to the closest pod

You might notice in the Bell Wi-Fi AppOpens in a new tab or window that devices which are physically closer to a Wi-Fi Pod might connect to the modem or to a different pod. When first connecting to the network, many devices will connect to the closest pod at first. After connecting, there are two factors that determine which pod/modem a device will connect to:

Bell Software: The decision of where to steer a device is based on the speed of the connection. Bell software checks the entire path the data travels when choosing a device-to-pod connection. The closest pod will not always be the fastest connection. Bell software also takes into account the number of devices and how much bandwidth is being used on each pod.  If too many devices or too much bandwidth is being used on a pod, a device may be steered to another connection.

The Device: Some devices are designed to hold on to a Wi-Fi connection while other devices are designed to roam between pods. For devices that do roam between pods, turning the Wi-Fi off and on may connect the device to the nearest pod until it is steered by the cloud.
