Cannot access USB drive connected to my Home Hub 3000/Giga Hub

Folks,

Despite initially being able to access the USB drive connected to my Home Hub 3000 router, I am no longer able, as confirmed via the following exception I'm now receiving:

stillyy4u_0-1675977833772.png

About a month ago, I did install Norton 360 but I'm not sure that it what's behind the behavioural change.  I've tried disabling Norton but that hasn't altered my outcome.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated...thx!

Regards,

Hey there @stillyy4u, yes everything looks good there.
Our best recommendation at this point would be to check for your USB in the network drive to see if anything comes up.

Keep us posted on how everything is going.

Hey Patricia,

Okay, despite MANY recent attempts at mapping a local drive to the thumb drive plugged into the HH3000 -- all of which have failed (hence the reason for raising this post) -- this time, it worked -- AGAIN!

Sadly, much like the inexplicable reason as to why this access mysteriously stopped working earlier, I cannot explain why it's now working again, as I've not applied any recent changes since implementing Norton A/V; that said, I have applied some O/S-related updates so not sure if that's made a difference.

In any event, as I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I'm just happy I'm back in business!

Thank you for your assistance in working with me on this concern.  It was very much appreciated!

If it is SMB1 related, you can enable SMB1 again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSIS18c0UyY

However, be aware of the security risks associated with SMB1 protocol.

A couple of apologies. After the reboot, AND using \\192.168.2.1 in both File Explorer and Directory Opus (DOPUS), i now have access to that USB drive. I can read and write, and from network connected machines. It's all good. Thanks to everyone.

Hey @Zarb

Thanks for the additional information 🙂

We discussed this with our internet tech team and they were able to do some testing on a Windows 11 laptop with version 24H2. We discovered it is necessary to enable the guest SMB in Windows in order to access any local storage connected to the modem gateway USB port.

After following the steps listed below, at initial login to the storage device on the USB port, enter guest in both the username and password box (but it should also work using any entry). Subsequent logins to the USB port on the modem will not request a username and password.

  1. Select Start, type gpedit.msc, and select Edit group policy.
  2. In the left pane under Local Computer Policy, navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Lanman Workstation.
  3. Open Enable insecure guest logons, select Enabled, then select OK.

Both SMB signing, and SMB encryption policies must be disabled in Group Policy in order to use guest logons. Doing so can potentially compromise the security of the client and leave users open to credential theft and relay attacks.

Also note that guest logons don't support standard security features such as SMB signing and SMB encryption even if the SMB client is set to allow guest logons.

You can learn a bit more on this Microsoft support page: How to enable insecure guest logons in SMB2 and SMB3Opens in a new tab or window

Let us know how everything turns out!

Hey there @stillyy4u, thanks for your post and welcome to the Bell Community 🙂

Can you try typing \\192.168.2.1 into the address bar of your browser and see if you have access?

Let us know how everything goes.

Hi Patricia,

I can access the HH3000 admin portal without issue so whatever's causing my USB access issue has not yet affected access to the portal.

What next?

stillyy4u

Thanks for testing that out for us @stillyy4u.
Is the USB drive working when you have it connected directly to your computer?
- Patricia

Hi Patricia,

Yes, I've no problem accessing the USB drive directly from any other computer on my network.

stillyy4u

Hey @stillyy4u. Since the USB drive is working on other computers it seems possible the issue lies with the computer that you recently installed Norton Anti-Virus on.

We recommend checking the Advanced sharing settings & the Network and sharing Centre to see if your Wi-Fi connection/network is set to public or private, and also confirm that the network discovery is set properly.

Check out the images below for a closer look at the settings.

Hey Patricia,

I suspect your capture came from a Windows 10 machine; here are the equivalent settings from my Windows 11 environment...

Any concerns here?

I followed the steps from Bell site to connect to a USB drive (\\mynetwork) with Bell Giga Hub, but it has got an error. from Windows 10 desktop PC: 'Windows cannot access \\mynetwork'. Someone could help to resolve this issue? Thanks!

Good afternoon @Colint430,
Welcome to the Bell Community.
Can you confirm if the USB drive is working when you have it connected directly to your computer?
Please also test out the different tips that we posted in the thread above, and let the Community know how everything is going.

Microsoft has removed support for SMB1 which is how PCs find the USB drive.  Is Bell going to issue a patch for the routers to be seen with non-SMB1 devices?

I have connected a 1TB (actually tried two different drives) to the Home Hub 3000 USB port, hoping to use it as a network visible drive; tried both USB ports. The drive shows in the router management app fine. According to all Bell instructions, all I need to do then is access \\mynetwork through File Explorer and I should see the drive. Absolutely no way does this work. I get a pop-up windows stating "Windows cannot access \\mynetwork, with error code 0x80004005. Following suggestions from various users, I have activated SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support (Automatic Renewal, Cline, and Server) in various combinations — all with no success. It doesn't appear anywhere in File Explorer, including under "Network", although I can see all my printers, etc.

Using Windows 11 24H2; Intel Ethernet I219-V; Bell Home Hub 3000

Extremely frustrating. Is there an issue with Windows 11? or what? Any help really appreciated.
