Is it recommended to turn off the modem when we are away for a few months?

Do you have any services connected to the internet? An alarm system might be an example. If so, don't turn off the modem. If there are no services connected, turning it off does no harm. Your bill won't change, though.

There is no need to tutn your equipment off for the short period you are talking about. You will save pennies in electrical. Probably more aggravating to to do all of the updates when you come back.

You can consider suspending your services if you are away for more than 3 months. Otherwise, my suggestion is to leave well enough alone  with the confidence & assurance that everything is working as it should be when you come back home. Enjoy your vacation away from home!
