Hi there, @James2. Welcome to the Bell Community.

Firstly, thank you @WelshTerrier for the informative reply. 🙂 I did want to step in a provide some additional details as well.

We do suggest making sure that your monthly plan does indeed provide hotspot support. If your plan is Lite or Promo then hotspotting would not be available to you; your only options would be to upgrade to an Essential or Ultimate tier plan. This goes for both phone and tablet plans.

If you're unsure how to tell or would like to change your plan if need be, you can check out your plan details and new plans available to you on MyBellOpens in a new tab or window

iPhone Personal Hotspot Setup

You can connect to a Personal Hotspot using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB.

When you connect a device to your Personal Hotspot, the status bar turns blue and shows how many devices have joined. The number of devices that can join your Personal Hotspot at one time depends on your carrier and iPhone model. If other devices have joined your Personal Hotspot using Wi-Fi, you can use only cellular data to connect to the internet from the host device.

Wi-Fi

On the device that you want to connect to, go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot and make sure that it's on. Then verify the Wi-Fi password and name of the phone. Stay on this screen until you’ve connected your other device to the Wi-Fi network.

On the device that you want to connect, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and look for your iPhone or iPad in the list. Then tap the Wi-Fi network to join. If asked, enter the password for your Personal Hotspot.

Bluetooth

To make sure that your iPhone or iPad is discoverable, go to Settings > Bluetooth and stay on that screen. Then on your Mac, follow the manufacturer directions to set up a Bluetooth connection. Learn more about using Personal Hotspot with Bluetooth.

Personal Hotspot supports Bluetooth connections with Mac and other third-party devices. To connect another iOS device, use Bluetooth.

USB

Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes and the Finder on your Mac. Then connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer with the USB cable that came with your device. If you see an alert that says tap "Trust This Computer?" tap Trust.

Set up Personal Hotspot

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.

Set or change your Wi-Fi password

You need to set a Wi-Fi password in order to set up a Personal Hotspot. To change the Wi-Fi password, go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot, then tap the Wi-Fi password.*

Choose a Wi-Fi password that's at least eight characters long and use ASCII characters. If you use non-ASCII characters, other devices will be unable to join your Personal Hotspot. Non-ASCII characters include characters in Japanese, Russian, Chinese, and other languages. ASCII characters include:

  • All the letters in English, both lowercase and uppercase
  • The digits 0 through 9
  • Some punctuation marks

Enjoy. Take care!

How to share internet with my phone wifi

I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue before.

My wife and I are currently on shareable plans. Originally, I had a BYOD $40 5gb data plan. I had a Pixel and could use my phone as a hotspot no problem. My wife had some $50 plan with 5gb of data also. However, her iPhone 13 was never able to be used as a hotspot. It used to send her a text message saying she needed to call bell to use this service as soon as a device tried to connect to her wifi hotspot. The text would say

"Trying to connect another deivce to your smartphone hotspot? As a reminder, your current rate plan does not support hotspot functionality."

We called Bell and they said that her plan type didn't support hotspot capability and that we would have to change plans, fine. So, we went down to the Bell store and we both changed our plans so that we now have the same plan, $45 20gb of data shareable student plan. The agent we spoke to at the Bell store assured us that these plans had hotspot capabilities. I told the agent explicitly that I require a plan with hotspot functionality, and they assured me several times that it would work. After the plan change my phone still works as a hotspot, so I thought everything was fine. With this new plan she got a new iPhone 14 and this phone is doing the same thing with the same error and text message.

I tried her SIM in my phone and it worked as a hotspot, and when I put my SIM in her phone then she can hotspot as well. So, I called Bell again and they said the plan doesn't support hotspot functionality and that she needs to upgrade to a $90 plan. They can't add any features to her plan and lots of other excuses. I spent about 3 hours on the phone with the agent. They had me on hold for about half of that time trying stuff or talking to people, I have no idea. We restarted the device several time and followed all instructions from the agent. The end result is that now when someone tries to connect the text message won't be sent, but it will try to open a browser to connect to the network. After all of the changes that they made the hotspot won't work at all now, even if I put her SIM into my phone.

I had a long discussion with the agent when she told me hotspot isn't enabled for these plans, and how the other agent at the store assured us that it was enable which is why we switched in the first place. The agent on the phone said they made a ticket to escalate it to their tech department and see what can be done, after 2 weeks they called me again and said that we need to upgrade to a $90 plan, and further I have a hunch that her hotspot will still not work after we do that because of whatever the main underlying reason is.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue is or how to get it solved?

I changed my password on my hotspot and now I can not connect to hotspot!!  Can’t remember old password to change it back to??

how to turn on the hotspot in my phone so I can use my computer outside?

How do i activate wifi hotspot on your iphone ??

My current plan doesn’t outright list that I have hotspot capabilities, where as, when I look at upgrading to a different plan, all the other plans list “addition features: hotspot capabilities”. I’m just wondering if I’m still able to hotspot, but at restricted speeds or will I be cut off completely when I start using data via tethering.

also, how likely is it that I can add the hotspot capability feature, even temporarily.

thanks

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum

While some people use the terms “hotspot” and “mobile hotspot” interchangeably, they have distinct meanings.

A Hotspot is a physical location where people can access the Internet, typically using Wi-Fi, via a wireless local area network connected to an Internet service provider. This you can do today without having Hotspot capabilities

A Mobile Hotspot (sometimes called a portable hotspot) is a hotspot that’s just that—mobile! While a “regular” Wi-Fi hotspot is tied to a physical location, you can create a mobile hotspot by using your smartphone’s data connection to connect other devices, tablet, computer  to the Internet. This process is called “tethering.” This needs to be a part of your mobility plan. If it is part of your plan, then you would need to turn this feature on in your device settings.

To add this feature if it is not included in your existing plan would require a plan change.

You would need to contact Bell Mobility in order to make this change.

I have an iPhone 15 and yes, it can be interesting to turn on the hotspot. There are good directions available in Apple’s support pages with explicit instructions on how to use that service.

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

Which mobility plan do you subscribe to? Does your mobility plan support Personal Hotspot capabilities? If so, then, I have included the instructions below for setup on your iPhone 15.

If your plan does not include Personal Hotspot, then you will need to contact Bell Mobility to make this change in your plan. To reach Bell Mobility, please call: 1 800 667-0123 or dial *611 from any Bell mobile device.
