Are there charges to chat through Gmail?

I’m chatting with a friend through their gmail account. Is there extra charges because it’s not a phone number?

There are not extra charges per se. Depending on mobility plan, there may be additional data charges related to video, data, etc. usage.

Chatting in itself with Gmail uses data. Check you data plan! There is no charge to "Chat".

I would suggest that you review your mobility plan to gain a better understanding of what coverage you have related to data, video, texting, etc.
