Locking out rental and parental locks - how do some of the options work?

Angus52
Contributor III

First, I was able to create a parental lock PIN. It works.

But the rental lock does not respond to that PIN I created. Where would I get the PIN that will let me lock out rentals? I do not want my father in law or my daughter ordering stuff (accidentally or because it isn't buttoned down... the only difference between the two is one has a larger bank book...).

Second, in Parental Locks, can I alter which channels of the adult option? (Some I didn't think should be are locked).

If I can't do it with the Adult option, how does that change with respect to the 18+ and older option? I don't quite understand how these two options differ - help?

If I can't have the granulated choices I want to block in adult or 18+ options, if I use the channel option, can I set the porn channels (even PPV) to be locked out?

Good Day.

Select the web link below & choose > Change button to select your remote control. Select > Step-by-step tutorials. Open up one of the subsections & there will be detailed instructions on: Using Parental Controls

Fibe TV Voice Remote (bell.ca)

You should familiarize yourself with all of the contents & support for your remote control & receiver. There is a wealth of knowledge included in each section.

Using parental controls on your Fibe TV Box : Blocking mature programming (bell.ca)

You can also use parental controls to:

  • Restrict inappropriate content
  • Lock specific channels

You can set up a PIN in MyBell , which will apply the changes to all your receivers at once.

Or if you want the PIN to work on only one receiver, or to set different PINs for each receiver, just follow these steps:

  1. On your remote, press the Menu button.
  2. Select Settings --> Parental controls --> Rental locking.
  3. Enter a 4-digit PIN.
  4. Confirm your PIN.
  5. Select Lock renting.
  6. Select Save.

Hi @Eric1975
That would be the VIP7802. To set up a Favorites list, you would do the following:
1. Press the house button on the remote.

2. Go down to settings.

3. Go down to "My Preferences" section and select "Manage Favorites".

4. Select all the channels that you want to see on your guide (once selected a little heart will appear on the channel icon).

5. Once you have selected all your favorite channels, go back to the "My preferences" menu, go under "Guide filters".

6. Deselect "Subscribed and popular" and select "Favorites", scroll down to the Quality section and make sure there is no check mark beside "Best Quality, 4K, HD, SD".
7. Go back to your Guide and you should only see all the channels you selected in your favorites.

Hey there @Ex_Brit

Thank you for your post.

Parental controls cannot be set up remotely by a Bell Technician. When you set up parental controls on your TV parental controls need to be set on each receiver individually and will only apply to the TV attached to a particular receiver. Take a look at this support article for more information How to set parental controls with Bell Fibe TVOpens in a new tab or window

My father in law, 90, not too good with the remotes, is struggling because there are a pile of channels that are not subscribed or otherwise are not wanted. I went into Parental Restrictions and set the lock on about 700+ channels. What I could not lock (click but won't lock) is the Video on Demand channels.

My father in law, age 90, not so good of hearing, has already been charged for "Trolls Under the Bridge" for $6.99. Do you suspect he meant that?

How do I prevent ANY and ALL channels that can result in triggering a new channel subscription, a purchase or rental of a video/movie, etc. ?

I really want them to not be seen, period. If not, at least I want every channel that can trigger a purchase to be locked out.

And yes, I can make a set of favourites. But its easy for him to hit the wrong controls and step out of that favourite list so that solution isn't a solution (at least by itself).

I need to get rid of many channels that don't matter and to get rid of all the ones that can force a purchase. Please tell me there is a way that actually works for this.

If I can't prevent purchases without intent, then we'll have to send back all this gear...

Good Day.

You can not lock out Video on Demand.. You can lock out purchases including On Demand purchases.

We all enjoy the great on demand and pay-per-view content on Fibe TV, but sometimes family members can purchase a show or event by accident or without your permission. Luckily it’s easy to set up a parental control PIN and save yourself from a surprise on your bill.

You can also use parental controls to:

  • Restrict inappropriate content
  • Lock specific channels

I changed the PIN in MyBell via my browser. My wife noted it in the email (it happened, she gets the emails).

But the new PIN would not work on the Fibe box of my father in law. It kept the old (and different from the rest of them in the house) PIN. I rebooted Fibe TV from that Fibe box. I then rebooted the system from the Fibe Box. Neither seemed to affect the old PIN.

Since your instructions said that I could change all the boxes to one PIN didn't work, what do you think that was?

Hi there @Angus52
Thank you for your post.
We would recommend rebooting all of your receivers, ensure they are connected to the internet and working and then going into your MyBell and changing the PIN.  If you're still having trouble, are you able to share the steps you are using to change your PIN and have you also tried adding them manually per receiver?
Looking forward to hearing back how that goes.

We got Bell Fibe TV today.  Our Fibe TV box is model VIP7802.  Going through the channels, I found a bunch of unwanted adult pay-per-view channels in the Guide in the 700s.  So I followed the instructions to lock them out, namely: I created a 4-digit PIN, went to Canadian Content control, and clicked the button to lock out adult content. Then Guide showed "locked out" for all those channels.  However, two hours later, they were all listed again in Guide.  So I repeated the lock-out procedure, and again it seemed to work for an hour or two.  But those channels all returned after another hour.  Why is this happening? Is there a way to make the lockout permanent?

Good Day.

You will need to customize the Guide. Setting a PIN does not remove the channel from the Guide. The PIN only stops you from accessing the channel.

I have inluded the following web link that will assist you in Customizing the channel guide. Follow the instruction that are included in the section > Watch shows with your Fibe TV Voice Remote.  Select > the + sign to open this section. Select the sub-section > Customizing the channel guide. Follow the tutorial instructions to add or remove channels from the Guide.

Dear @WelshTerrier,

Thanks very much for your prompt reply!  I will make the changes that you suggested.  However, I'm not sure I have clearly explained the problem with my Fibe.  As you can see from the attached screenshot, I have checked the button labeled "Lock Adult Programs" using the Settings Menu20240815_172219.jpg.  But when I come back to the TV two hours later and reopen the Settings menu, that checkmark is gone.  Why is this happening?

Good Day.

Let’s start by following my suggestion to customize the guide & remove the channels you do not subscribe to and the remaining channels you do not want to watch.  Keep in mind there are some channels you can not remove from the guide. E.g. Video on demand, etc.

I also included a tutorial for Parental controla & locking specific channels. Please review it in its entirety & then test lock a specific channel.

I’ve locked the adult channels, but they still show in the guide. Some of the titles are not appropriate for my 11 year old to see.

How can I hide them on the guide?

Hi there @Eric1975
Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community.
At this time, there is no way to hide a channel from the guide. Although, you do have the option to put your guide to show your "Favorites".  Are you able to share some further information about your service?
Which television service do you subscribe to (Satellite, Fibe, Fibe TV app)?
If any, which receiver model(s) do you have?
Looking forward to hearing back.

We have FibeTV with the smart TV box (android square box that has Bell written on the top)

Hi @Eric1975
That would be the VIP7802. To set up a Favorites list, you would do the following:
1. Press the house button on the remote.

2. Go down to settings.

7. Go back to your Guide and you should only see all the channels you selected in your favorites.

I’m familiar with the process but I have a question about it.   I have the Gigaibit3000 modem & have locked out any rentals in the living room TV box.  I have a large bedroom rented out to a flat-mate and I can’t access his TV box and remote so I can’t block them in there.   Tech Support was vague when I called.  Can they do it remotely or not?
