Recordings will now expire after 60 days

If I have recordings older than 365 days, (or more than 320 hours), will they all suddenly disappear?

This is a drastic change that most people probably don’t know about.
TV isn’t essential of course, but I still have some old stuff I’d like to watch.

So why did Bell choose this box when they signed people up after their Fibe rollout?  Seems this will affect tons of customers.

its called a bait and switch. there seemed to be some sort of push to get people off of the traditional pvr's.

likely pressure for the networks who dont like the idea of people skipping commercials. the pvr and the cloud based one recently disabled fast forwarding on events that were recorded recently. ex, sporting events or formula 1 race...it is silly.

they sold everyone on the cloud based and apps, 365 days recording, etc. ridiculous..
it is a system they can control completely, seeing as the recordings are not local on your end...

I think that there is some ageism involved with all of this.  And I had this opinion before they did this 60 day stuff.  I’m sure that the majority of people that actually record are shall we say a little older.  Bell knows that their PVR system is garbage compared to Rogers and they aren’t trying very hard to fix it.  Even their techs have told me how Bell had to rush out a voice search system once Rogers released theirs.   Their google system is pathetic and they have to know it.  They are pushing people towards On Demand and services that we have to pay for.  I don’t know anyone that likes On Demand, especially when they disable the remote features.  Just this week I now can’t rewind much on live tv.  It says buffering and then warns me if I try to rewind anymore it will put me to On Demand.  Now we are getting these silly messages saying To be deleted soon. Whoever does their coding couldn’t even come up with a system that could say the actual date that they will be deleted.  Anyway, like I started with, I’m sure this is a matter of ageism….and they don’t really care.

With this change I am not pleased but I have now gone back to using my bell streamer for primary tv watching.

The feature sets are identical with the new 60 day limit.

I have been using a bell streamer since it was released and after the few bugs were cleaned out I have found it to have none of the issues of the bell 7802 box. Freezing black screens bugs related to resetting remotes frequent reboots lagging responses out of synch voice and or closed captions and many others.

I have never called for support on my bell streamer and never replaced one.

So the only loss to me is the option of having preferred movies available for a year or even better over a year. I will buy them. Did that for years.

The wisdom of being able to adapt to change and move on that comes from life experience.

And it has been said before let's leave the generalizations of ageism out of the discussion. We are all individuals and approach life in our own unique ways.

As for comparison with Rogers they are beholden to Comcast in the states and have their own limited feature sets like limited in the access to installing a range of streaming apps and the ability to install on smart tv and android Roku or fire stick and others. No integration with google home. I can even manage my home automation system (non bell)  integration with the streamer voice remotes on both boxes with Bell. If you want app streaming from Rogers you have to get their seperate ignite streaming service and seperate box free for two years then 4.99 afterwards, with only app choices decided by Rogers/Shaw. With the purchase of Shaw they did get the ability to cast from an android device to Chromecast only not on an android box Roku etc and you cannot cast any apps other than their proprietary viewing app which means it is merely an alternative to a remote and they say the benefit is you can keep watching while searching other shows. No ability to run directly installed on smart tv or other devices.  No google tv play store or any choice of apps.

Limited options on apps beyond their subscribed services and the big ones like Spotify. No Sirius Amazon music fubo or the full range of games from Google Play or Amazon app store.

So pros and cons for all companies. Research thoroughly the full product options between companies and make your choice.

So I am moving on from this with my own solution. I have to have the one box but I can get all I need for recording with the new limitations on my preferred boxes in my home.

As a final note I have recommended bell fibre tv since I started using it and was very happy with support ease of use and the expansive options available technologically. Given this and other business decisions by bell I still recommend the service with a maybe response after advising the limitations changing customer support channels and shutting down large swathes of media options to customers.

For me this change is huge - I signed up a little over a year ago and was told 365 days, then for it to change to 60 days - that is unexpectable.  They indicate that this will only effect a small number of people - then why make the change to upset your customers.  All just talk, trying to backup a bad decision for the customer, but good for Bells pockets.  Not happy about this and when my contract is up, I will be finding another source for Internet and TV - and my 5 x cell phones I might have added at that time.

What is the difference between the 7802 box and the Streamer box?  Does the Streamer record and is it also affected by the 60 day limit?   Mr. BellDRock mentioned only the 7802 was?

The bell streamer is basically bell fibre app built into a traditional android box. The recording limits are the same as for bell fibre app of 60 days. The box is purchased for 79 and change. You have to have one 7802 for recordings but I am now using it in spare room only. You can also do it from any compatible device that runs the five tv app. I just happen to have a streamer box from my last home free with my fibre tv app service package when you stayed 6 months. I'm leaning to over time replace my fire stick with a streamer. Full 4k now same recording limitations as on 7802.

In this link you can see more detail.

Just a reflection. Almost 40 years ago we bought our first VCR to accomodate life style and children that prevented watching live tv.

Then came DRM copyright restrictions so got a cable pvr set top box. Never really did record a lot of shows for long term. Movies I just kept buying or renting. I always liked going to the video store. It was a Friday night outing with family including dinner. Then weekend movie watching with snacks just like a theatre outing.

When we got access to five tv we went the alt tv now fibe app model with no recordings and rented and purchased series and movies from Google tv. No time limits other than keeping a Google account and any changes to copyright restrictions such as happens when media producers merge go out of business or do like Bell just did.

I moved and went to a local cable company. Good price much the same features as bell and android IPTV box but I disliked the reliability of their box as much as the 7802.

I agree that the change by bell was very heavy handed and would appear to be money decision but that is the corporate world of our times.

With that I may add in more detail of my home setups or will answer tech or other questions on services but I stopped complaining on forums about company decisions when I left the big cable company when they were attempting their 5 year plus move to IPTV models and bell in my opinion still does it best.

Now on to other life changes and enjoying my tv watching.

My strong advice though is use the complaint and CRTC and other channels. Other than an opportunity to vent once a decision is made other than announcing a change and clarifying details the moderators really have little they can say nor the calls directly to bell.

Happy tv watching

Bruce

Thanks for the clarification. We have been having problems with our wireless receiver for 18 months. It has been replaced six times. The last time I phoned technical support they claimed we had too many recordings and that’s why we weren’t accessing the recordings off our wireless receiver as well. I ended up removing 75% of our recordings even though we weren’t anywhere near close to the space allotted. We still couldn’t access our recordings off the wireless receiver. And now I discover we don’t have a cloud based PVR so I didn’t have to read delete the recordings after all!

I am very unhappy with this change. I keep some recordings longer and watch them multiple times

60 days is not enough time. 120 would be more reasonable

I was noticing that I only have 17% or 54 hours of 320 hours allowable used on my PVR.  That's because I delete when done; I'm due to reduce this again for recent 1/2 hr shows that I don't need to keep so it should go down to 10%.  But I would like to be able to keep a few 2-3 hours sport programs for a little longer that I'll watch again in the summer.

Just reduce the 320 hour limit (which is very high) to 160hrs - so we can keep certain programs longer.  This would be best to give us options to reduce the cloud space - or let us purchase the hard drive Pvr.  Again we are paying for the Pvr service.

I will leave Bell.

If I have recordings I want to keep, maybe a fave sporting event, a friend on tv, special local event etc., I can’t keep those?

I record everything to watch when I want.

If Cogeco allows saving things, I’ll go with them.If not, I’ll leave cable altogether and use other cheaper methods.

Yes !  That's why I have a 60" TV so that I can watch shows on my phone or iPad.  Right ??

I was never given the choice to have anything else.  But then I was also told by the rep who signed me up AND the tech who did the installation that the recordings were saved for a year OR as long as there was available space.  I feel bad using my 13% capacity ...

I guess my old Bell PVR never got the message.  I have Dr. who episodes from about 3 years ago...

Or, that's the difference from local to Cloud PVR.
