Error setting up email: the IMAP server doesn't support Password authentication

Bell email was successfully installed and running properly on my ipads; one a regular ipad and the other a new ipad pro. I also have Bell email set up and running on my iphone. Everything was working properly until I tried to change my email password on the devices. The password change worked on my iPhone but not on my two iPads. I have tried deleting the accounts and adding them again but I always get the error that "the IMAP server "imap.bell.net" doesn't support Password authentication". I try adding the account manually with no success. Very frustrating to have things work correctly one minute but not the next. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there @Trying Hard

Thank you for reaching out and for the troubleshooting you have tried so far.

Are you using an email client to access your Bell email on any other devices?

Please reset your password, and be sure to update it on any devices where it is already saved. Then delete the email from your iPhone and set everything back up from scratch.

Keep us posted and let us know if everything is working afterwards.

@BellPatricia

The only other device I use to access Bell email is my laptop for which I use the browser based login. There's no other place to reset. I have deleted and reset up 10 times. Still nothing is working. I receive the same message: The IMAP server "imap.bell.net" doesn't support Password authentication

Hi, @BellPatricia, I'm still unable to access my email. Might there be new problems with the changes to MFA, which happened as I swapped phones. My old phone was working fine with the same settings--Telus says this is a Bell issue. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Good day @Trying Hard

Thank you for your reply 🙂

If you are still having trouble we recommend setting up your Bell email in a different email client. Some members mention that they prefer to use Outlook.

You can also access Bell webmail in a web browser to view your emails in the meantime.

Please let us know if you have any more questions.

@BellPatricia

I have purchased Office 365 for several year and never had problems setting up email on any platform (windows, phone, Samsung tablet). Purchased a Lenovo Yoga and cannot create an IMAP account. Their customer service unable to resolve, MS didn't respond. I've followed all the suggestions and cannot get it to work. Any other help avail PLEASE!

Hi there @TonyPrincipe

Thanks for reaching out to the Bell community 🙂

Can you clarify what exactly happens when you try to set up your email (e.g. error message) and which troubleshooting suggestions you have tried so far?

To start, we recommend that you check the settings in Office 365 to ensure Enable IMAP is turned ON.

Let us know how everything is going.

I’d rather have my throat ripped out by a rabid ferret than have to use Bell webmail. It’s the most unintuitive junk of software I have had the misfortune to deal with. And the chat function you have doesn’t help. I need to know if the problem is iOS or Bell.

Good Day & Welcome.

Thank you for your feedback. Do you have a question, concern or an issue that we can help you with?

You mentioned, "I need to know if the problem is iOS or Bell." If you can tell us more, we will do our best to help resolve any issues you might be experiencing with Bell's webmail.

Let us know.

Take care.

I have to confess I am a bit confused by your comment. Webmail uses the browser of your choice. Are you using Safari or another browser? Perhaps if you could say more about the issues you are having, along with your device we might be able to offer suggestions.

Good Day.

As a follow up to my earlier reply, which model of Apple device do you have? Which iOS are you using? Are you using a browser to access your webmail or are you using an app such as Apple Mail, Outlook, etc.

How do you wish to access your Bell webmail? Browser or app? The easiest and best method for accessing your Bell webmail would be using the Apple Mail app that is included with your device.

Please tell us more about the issue you are experiencing.

As a starting point only, are your iOS and apps up to date on your device? I have included instructions for setting up Bell webmail using Apple's Mail app. These instructions can be used for both an iPhone and iPad.

How to set up Bell email on my Apple iPhone

If you are using an older Apple device that does not use the most current iOS, you can use these instructions to set up your Bell webmail on an iPhone and iPad. The instructions are very similar to the ones mentioned above. They have a slightly different starting point for setting up email accounts.

To Poppi and everyone else who has weighed in: it turned out to be the same problem to which I think Poppi  referred — the Bell server (if that’s what it is) rejected my password five or six times and then quite unexpectedly said “Okay!”  Maybe it was a result of something the propellor-heads in the back room did at Apple that required done tidying up at Bell. Funny how technology works: with cars, things have gotten simpler and simpler: you don’t even have to stick the key in the ignition, and god forbid you’d have to pull the choke out or, yikes!, advance the spark timing. But with the wonderful world of digital communications, you have to know how to sooth the server of a huge communications firm at the same time as being knowledgeable about all the variations of how various browsers display what should be common items — it’s like driving to the a strange town and finding that traffic lights are blue and orange rather than green and red. Why in the world would you want one browser to work (and display) differently? And don’t get me started on all the “convenient” icons that are hard to see either aging eyes and of course don’t actually specify their function.

Does the little bent arrow at the top of the web browser email mean “send” or “reply” or what? ‘Nuff said. I’ll just leave you all with this: the communications biz needs to standardize its interfaces, and for god’s sake don’t reward the techies for rolling out “improvements” which are only different, but not functionally better.

My comments on webmail stand, and it would never have occurred to me that different browsers would display differently — it’s their bad, not mine.

Good Day.

Thank you for your gracious reply. We appreciate your input & feedback.

Glad to hear that you are now able to access your Bell webmail.

Have a wonderful day.

Take care.
