Canadian resident travelling to US then a Caribbean cruise

Good morning, I’m a Canadian resident driving to US then boarding a 7 day cruise to the Bahamas. What kind of coverage is the best?  I am purchasing on board the ship an Internet package but was curious what ours cover. Thanks for any help.

Hey there @Merrimac1

Welcome to the Community and thanks for your post.

Available travel packages will depend on the specific location where you're planning on using your mobile phone. Depending on where you will be visiting while on the Cruise, your best option may be our Roam BetterOpens in a new tab or windowas the feature is compatible with over 200 international destinations.

You can also visit our website on our travel support article.Opens in a new tab or window On the page you will see a map with a drop down menu that you can select your travel locations and it will show you the pay-per-usage rates (if no travel package is added to your account) and best travel package options.

As cruise ships have their own communication system in place, only pay-per-use rates apply (Travel packages will not work on the cruise ship).

If you use it, there will be a charge. If you turn it off & it is in airplane mode, it can not be used, therefore, there is no charge.

If you have no plans on using it, then you can do 1 of 2 things:

  1. Cal Bell mobility & disable the feature completely or
  2. Restrict access completely and access it on a need be basis.

Either way, you would need to contact Bell Mobility with what you want to do before you need to use it!

Call: 1-800-667-0123 or * 611 from your mobile phone.

I would like to take my phone with me to Italy .  15$ per day for usage

what exactly does this cover?
and if I don’t turn it on or keep it in airplane mode will I still be charged 15/ day?

You can, but there may be additional costs. You will be connecting through your ship's on-board wi-fi and cellular service which is slower than you would find at home and may have separate, additional charges . You may also need the Roam Better add on plan to your current phone plan. You can find more Bell information here.

Roam Better does not cover roaming charges on cruise ships and in-flight services.

Take care.

I think you can . I call or go into a bell store and ask what you can get for when you are down there

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by extra coverage? Do you mean increased mobility time & data? Are you talking about Bell Roam Better - with home data?

Hello, We will be flying into the US and then boarding a ship for a Cruise. How do we check what is covered in our plan? Are we able to use data/phone on ship with no extra charges? Thanks for any info.

Hello,
This is the plan we have .... if we are on the ship, believe we are unable to use for data only, is that right?

But once we are in Port - say, US, Mexico, country covered in plan, then if access data assume would be charged the daily rate, are we reading this right?

Thanks for any assistance!

Good Day.

I will try to answer your question as best can be based on the limited information you have provided.

You are not covered for any usage charges on cruise ships and in-flight services.

Your plan does not cover unlimited calling, texting & data in the U.S. and Mexico. (The Ultimate 200-CAN/U.S./MEX plan includes unlimited calling, texting & data in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico)

International roaming fees will apply if you use your phone outside of Canada. This includes calls that you make and text messages that you send. Fees can also apply to the data you use while roaming. For example, if you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network and you want to browse the Internet, you can use your data, but international roaming fees will likely apply.

While outside of Canada, making and receiving calls, sending text messages, checking your voicemail, and using data (including Instagram, Whatsapp, or TikTok, etc., and sharing or receiving a picture via text) all count as Roaming usage and / or Pay Per Use usage rates.

Unbeknown to you, keeping your device data turned on may also trigger roaming usage, as most applications on your device refresh content in the background, resulting in data usage & roaming charges. Powering your device on & activating an eSim or dual SIM for travel SIM outside of Canada will also trigger data usage & roaming charges. To avoid a roaming charge, remove your Bell SIM beforehand.

If you want to avoid any & all charges while travelling outside of Canada, you can choose to:

  1. Turn off your data & roaming in settings on your device. Turn on Airplane mode.
  2. Power your device completely off.
  3. As an alternative, you can also choose to remove your Bell SIM before leaving Canada instead or powering your device completely off. Just do not power your device on before removing your Bell SIM. If you do so, this will result in a roaming charge.

Roaming is available with most monthly plans.

1. U.S. Travel $13.00 / day

2. International Travel $16.00 / day

I have an international plan on my cell plan including data. Should I still turn off my data roaming while I am on my cruise ship?
