Pause & Record Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy

I am exasperated that Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy cannot be paused or recorded on Bell Satellite HD1202 or 282. I've just spent 27 minutes on the phone with Bell's tech support, who struggled to comprehend the issue or to find evidence that others are having this problem too.  We use a 9500 PVR on Bell Satellite.  What is the reason these shows can't be paused or recorded?  And how will Bell fix it?  And if Bell can't fix it, how do I get compensated for PVR functionality not working?  We used to be able to pause and record these shows without problem.  Other shows on these channels can be paused and recorded, as well as shows on other channels.  What gives with Bell's Wheel & Jeopardy feeds?

Thanks for your concern. What is the receiver you have on Bell Satellite TV? Knowing that might help us respond to your question.

I saw this and usally ignore ? Wanted to know  is it channel 1202 on bell sat. Your problem is . But this is a first for me .

Yes, it happens on 1202 and 282.  Both these channels have the usual American programming substituted by YesTV, which offers Canadian ads.  YesTV is preventing the pause/record/rewind functions of the Bell PVR from working as usual.  Bell needs to fix this with YesTV.  When will it get fixed?

I saw that you posted in a discussion that I had created about "channel substitution" and in particular about this time slot and the YESTV substitution.   I haven't recently tried recording these programs on my 9242.   I also have a 9400.  I will give it a try today.   One question: are you doing "programmed recording" or a "record in real time" (ie. watching and recording the program).   What indications  / errors are you getting, if any?  The substitution of this particular channel seems to have issues somewhere in general.   My audio issue associated with this seems to have recently "disappeared"... I wonder why.. 🙂

Thank you for trying to help me, budwich.  I'm sorry I hijacked your "channel substitution" thread.  I saw your post and overzealously thought our issues could be related.  Then I realized that was a dumb thing to do.

I have two timers set, one for Wheel and the other for Jeopardy on HD1202.  I usually watch both shows after they've played live.  Occasionally, I watch while the recording is taking place.  That's what I did last night.  If I pause while the recording is going on, then I try to resume playing, the recording jumps to live time, instead of showing the recorded minutes that were paused.  If I try to go back and watch the recording, all I see is a black screen with white letters in the top right corner "LIVE".  The recordings aren't working.  They don't work when I watch hours after the shows aired, either.  Google's AI suggested YesTV is using some kind of "copy protection metadata".

I had a lengthy chat with Bell this morning.  They'll investigate with YesTV.  They promised to get back to me.  I'll share what I learn, if anything.  Thank you again for being on this with me.

no problem... actually you provided some useful info that you have gleamed from your efforts about the channels involved... (ie. copy protection metadata).   My "audio issue" seemed rather strange as it only happened with this time slot and substitution.   Other substitutions did not seem to have a problem.  Not knowing much, I figured that the yestv "channel" isn't a "normal tv broadcast channel" but some form of "stream based service channel" that some how finds its way to bell and that those "characteristics" do not seem to be well defined for bell to handle and "transposing" in terms of encoding / decoding along the way.... can you say "audio metadata"... 🙂   I have not found any other timeslots that bell does the yestv substitution in... no one has offered that information.   I guess its a secret.  🙂   A lot of these "issues" seem to be related / began with Bell decommissioning one of the sats (82) and transitioning channels to different feeds / encoders / decoders.... if you follow a few of the discussions about  video "jitter" / "stutter" that have been posted herein.  It would see like a simple process but obviously there is more to it than meets the "bits".

"If I try to go back and watch the recording, all I see is a black screen with white letters in the top right corner "LIVE"."

Can you tell me how much memory is available on your pvr?   I am not totally familiar with all the record sequences that can happen along with outcomes but there are a few.   I  don't usually watch a channel that I am recording... but I do go backward in time some times to pickup something that I may have missed during the live broadcast use "back" and other commands.   I think you maybe "tripping" over an issue with "skip back" functions that are used when pausing a "live" channel... the pvr will be now "looking" at the "live buffer" recording.   When you say "I try to resume playing", are you hitting "live" on your remote OR "play".   I do believe (I haven't tried), but maybe you should be hitting the "pause" button again.... maybe you get a different result????

Hey Weezie3...

I did some recording / pausing tests on my 9400 and 9242 at the 7pm  CBS timeslot.   They seem to work so I don't see your problem BUT came across this link which sounds similar to your issue... have you seen it.

Maybe all this complaining worked?  Last night's recordings of Wheel and Jeopardy worked perfectly.  We tested pausing while recording, then rewinding, and watching the recording.  It worked!  It did not resume the live feed after pausing as it was doing before.  We also tried watching a recording after the recording had completely finished.  That too worked!  I am truly amazed.  No more black screen with LIVE in white letters in the top corner.

To answer your question, budwich, we have 200 hours of HD recording time available and 700 hours of SD available.  We usually erase programs after watching.

We will test our Wheel & Jeopardy skills again tonight, along with our PVR.

Thank you for helping me.

Good thinking.  We only use the "pause" and "play" buttons on the remote, no "live" button.

Thank you for the link.  It does sound like our problem, especially when F1alive said their 9500 receiver was not able to play back after hitting the pause button. It goes to live TV.  That was happening for us.  We'll test again tonight.

Did Bell actually get back to you with any information about what they found ... as you reported they said they would investigate and get back to you?

No, Bell did not get back to me.  They said they'd email.

I suppose if I wanted, I could call them to ask them to look into the notes they said they were making, and get an update.  But I think I'd rather watch Wheel & Jeopardy.
