Outside temperature ratings for modem

I have a home hub in the old cottage and is not winterized that is connected by ethernet cable to small new cottage that is winterized. Can I leave the hub operating there over the winter --the old cottage is where the phone line comes too.

Thank you for your question. Is there a reason you might wish to leave it connected? Personally, I disconnect and take all my electronics home from my unheated cottage at Thanksgiving.

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community.

Yes, technically; although depending on the temperature if you leave these items out during the winter / summer months it may cause damage to both the modem and the ethernet cord, from either overheating or freezing. Our modems should operate in an environment between 0°C - 40°C. We'd recommend unplugging the modem and bringing it in somewhere when not in use.

As for your ethernet cord, it would be best to check online to see what the ratings for temperature are for your specific brand of cord.

There is no need to take it with you. As long as it secure & not exposed to the elements, it can be left in place.

If you are suspending your service, you can just unplug the Giga Hub from the power supply.

You can take it home with you if you so desire. You need to be careful when handling all of the wiring. Every cable that connects to your modem is critical & must be handled with care. The connections on all of them will take little force to break away from the fibre or ethernet cable connector. Treat them like glass. Very, very thin hair like crystal glass.

There is no reason for you to disconnect the connectors if you are leaving the modem in place. The connectors need to be protected from the elements & kept away from any little critter who decides to burrow & snack on them. 

Come spring, all you need to do is plug the modem power cord in & unsuspend your Internet service.

I think you can see Bell's response. Depending on where you are located, it's not a great idea to keep the modem installed and on in an unheated space in the winter. Damage is very possible. I understand your situation. Although a number of others in my community do have installed security systems, I have never felt the need for one. Everyone makes choices, however.
