PPPOE not working after a recent firmware update

Hello,

I know this is a grey zone and is not officially supported but like a lot of Bell users i use my own routing equipment and like other users i have found that since my modem rebooted on the latest firmware, pppoe from the router is not working anymore.

There is already a reddit thread discussing the details here:

Basically the bug seems to be that "Any packet over certain size would trigger incorrect PPP frame length meaning that the length reported in the header was different from the actual payload size."

Is it possible to know if this is related to some firmware issue and a fix is coming or if it was deliberate change from Bell?

Any info about this would be appreciated since its currently starting to impact more users and we are all on our own so far wasting our time debugging this.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to post and share the issues you're experiencing with PPPoE functionality.

We are aware of the issue and technical teams are working on a fix.  Once a fix is confirmed, we will update this thread with an ETA on deployment.

Why are you responding on behalf of the community manager.
It’s a reasonable request to ask for some update.  Is it in development?  Is there a formal release schedule for the next firmware update containing this fix?

If I broke something at work that affected my company’s customers and didn’t fix it for over a month I’d be fired.  Why doesn’t Bell roll back to a previous firmware that was working?

If this is a deliberate move on Bell's behalf, it's just a matter of time before they implement something that will make sfp modules obsolete by forcing some kind of secondary authentication eg: proprietary software handshakes via yet another giga hub firmware update. I'm pretty sure this is possible.

Let's just cross our fingers and hope we won't be bamboozled.

Are they programmed or does that have to be done?

From what I have read from other forms/posts, there is some programming to be done on the XGS/PON adaptor. Access the adapter's webUI to copy the MAC ADDRESS from the GigHub, and set "35" on the adapter's VLAN (as a tag). Can't confirm if this works as I haven't bought the adaptor. 

When I set mine up i did not need to specify Vlan 35.  You have to enter the ONT number, vendor id and equipment ID shown on your Modem, then choose the Bell .MIB. It has been stable for me for the last week and getting full speeds. pon.wiki has some good guides on how to do it.

The top one, SC/APC w/ firmware 1301.
After ordering from Alibaba, I found what looks like the same one on Amazon faster, but more expensive:

Mated it with the Omada MC402L from Amazon:
Followed the instructions in pon.wiki, skipping the 1301 firmware load since it was already there. Plugged it all in, and the GigaHub has been packed in its box since.
Note that you may need to allow a few minutes for your router to connect the first time. My Asus BE88U took nearly 5 minutes, which had me a bit freaked out. Also note that it appears most "consumer" routers may limit the PPPoE upload speed to around 1Gbps. So you'll see the full 3Gbps down (assuming you're on the 3G package) but only 1Gbps up. You can tweak a few things to maximize that, but probably won't see much faster. Presumably some routers can do better if you're inclined to replace it.

@bpsmicro Did you try plugging the PON adapter into the spf+ port of the BE88u ?  Wondering if it fits / works. 

I didn't, mostly because I did a lot of searching & Googling and everything I read basically said that Asus didn't follow some standard for the SPF+ that the PON would require, so wouldn't work at all. Since I already had the Omada, I just went with that. Some day I might see if it'll work direct, but I'm not hopeful.

Ah, forgot to mention, the PON runs hot, so I also ordered this fan: 
and 3D-printed a mount for it. The fan plugs into the router's USB (you can use any USB power source though), and the PON reports a CPU temp around 60C. Doesn't feel hot to the touch. But I've read that if you don't add a fan, it'll run over 70C and be noticeable.

At alibaba's site, search for YUNVO XGSPON SP/APC w/ Firmware 8311. That same search should work for Amazon's $160 option.
Also on Amazon, search for Omada MC420L for the media converter, and Noctua NF-A4x10 5V PWM for the fan. The fan will require you to 3dprint a mount.
