WIFI Calling over Starlink doesn't work

My wifi calling won't when I'm connected to starlink, although it works fine when connected to Shaw fiber.

My starlink connects to a Seattle-based IP address so I'm guessing that's the problem since bell (strangely) doesn't allow wifi calling outside of canada.

When I try to connect to a vancouver-based vpn connection, it still doesn't work. I assume that bell has a list of VPN IPs to prevent this workaround.

Any suggestions to get this to work?

Hey there @cgx

Welcome to the Community and thanks for your post.

Wi-Fi calling will work as long as you have access to a Wi-Fi Network in Canada and connected with a Canadian IP address (E.g. Wi-Fi calling will not work if the device is connected to a U.S based IP address via VPN.).

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately Wi-Fi calling through Starlink only works in Canada, as confirmed by Bell in this forum thread . Wi-Fi calling through Starlink does not work outside of Canada.

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum

Bell does not offer Wi-Fi calling from outside of Canada.  Wi-Fi Calling usage will be included as part of the unlimited nationwide calling on eligible rate plans.

Please note: Wi-Fi calling is only available within Canada. Wi-Fi calls to locations outside of Canada will incur standard long-distance charges.

Take care.

Hi,

This is not an official answer, but I think it doesn't work because of the non-stable ip situation.

VPN use as well randomly attributed IP and they doesn't use the same "port" so, it might be the reason of this non-working problem.

Thanks for the reply Mark-Andre

I tried some more tests.
If I use starlink it doesn't work.
If I use starlink to a vancouver-based VPN ip-address, it doesn't work.

If I use shaw cable it works
If I use shaw cable to a vancouver-based VPN address, it works.

So it must have something to do with Starlink. Although I have no idea how it detects that I'm on starlink.

FWIW Bell WiFi calling works fine over Starlink for me, in Haliburton (about 200 km NE of Toronto). I use WiFi calling whenever I'm there because the local cell signal is very weak. I can't explain why it doesn't work for you. You might try asking in the Starlink subreddit.

In the early days of Starlink (say 2021) there were definitely issues with apps that used IP based geolocation to control access (like the TSN Direct app), but I've not heard of that being an issue recently (until @cgx posted).

I am out of the country and My wifi calling is showing enabled. I have gone through the process. My phone is in airplane mode and connected to strong wifi network via starlink. However I cannot make calls

my understanding was that the only time Starlink would come in to play is if you had a car accident and couldn't link to emergency dispatchers.  I could be 100% wrong, but that's the opinion I have on it when I asked my daughter

I live very Off grid And I have been able to use my WI.Fi calling through our starlink. Now it comes up as No network. I've tried switching on and off, Also the phone powering down Off and on.

Wi-Fi calling will work as long as you have access to a Wi-Fi Network in Canada and connected with a Canadian IP address.

If you're having trouble with Wi-Fi calling on Starlink, here are some things to try:

  1. Check your device's Wi-Fi Calling settings: Ensure that Wi-Fi calling is enabled and your device is correctly configured for it.
  2. Have you tried to restart your modem? This can resolve temporary software or hardware glitches.
  3. Have you restarted your device & verified that software & apps are up to date?
  4. Ensure a strong Wi-Fi signal: A weak or unstable Wi-Fi signal can cause call quality issues.
  5. Check your Starlink setup: Ensure that your Starlink router is properly configured and connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  6. Wi-Fi calling will not work if the device is connected to a U.S based IP address via VPN.

Take care.
