Pre-authorized payment delay and bill cycles

I set up automatic bell payment through Tangerine and it says on MyBell that I am late paying it.

AI Summary:

When you set up pre-authorized payments, the withdrawal of funds from your bank account or credit card does not happen immediately on the next bill's due date.  It's important to note that it can take one full billing cycle for pre-authorized payments to become active after you first enroll. For this reason, it is recommended to make a manual payment for your first bill after setting up pre-authorized payments to avoid any late fees.

You can review your billing and payment history, including your bill date, due date and any upcoming pre-authorized payment dates, by logging into MyBell.

Key Factors Influencing Pre-Authorized Payment Timing

Billing Cycle: Your bill is issued on the same date each month, and this date is typically determined by when services were first activated. Bell services are billed one month in advance and payment processing times are determined by the type of pre-authorized payment chosen.

Payment Method Processing Time:

  • Pre-authorized debit: Withdrawals from a bank account can take up to 18 calendar days to be processed after your bill date.
  • Pre-authorized credit card: Payments made with a credit card are typically processed within 7 business days after your bill date.

When a pre authorized payment is set up when does it come out of my account?

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

The processing time depends on the payment method you use:

  • Pre-authorized debit: Every month, up to 18 calendar days after the bill date.
  • Pre-authorized credit card: debit: Every month, up to 7 business days after the bill date.

If your Bell payment is late due to insufficient funds, your account will now be in arrears. Bell will charge late payment fees and potentially suspend your services. Specifically, a late payment fee is applied to the unpaid balance 30 days after the billing date.

How long does it take for my Bell payment to be processed?

I will leave this with you to ponder on: "Use your billing date as Bell's bill processing timeline. If sufficient funds are made available on this date, then you will not be faced with a missed payment.

Take care.

I also am a new customer, set up pre authorized banking and just paid my bill with my credit card to avoid late charges.  Do I need to notify Bell of this payment to avoid paying twice?

Hi @Jane7
Thank you for your post and welcome to the Community.
You shouldn't need to notify us of the payment if the next bill hasn't been sent yet. Manual payments with a credit card online usually takes about 30 minutes to reflect (so you should see this on your MyBell account).
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Community.

This is not a question, but rather a warning for others and, hopefully, Bell to fix this issue.

If you're setting up PAD automatic payment using Interac option, so it pulls details automatically, you need to pay attention to the account number that this actually uses. If you have more than one chequing account number, this automatic set up will pull the wrong account number. It does not give you an option to select a different account. It pulls account number automatically, it even has a message about that. So you need to verify it uses the correct account number before you submit PAD details.

It pulled my joint kids account details twice (I confirmed the issue doing it the second time). First time, I did not notice it as numbers are similar. That caused the payment to fail and RBC to charge NSF since there's only a few dollars in there for kids to use. Luckily, RBC waived the fee. And I had to talk to Bell support to remove late fees 🙄

Bell needs to fix it.

I set up PAD a month prior to first bill, same thing happened. Had to call and pay by cc to avoid late payment charges. Nobody on the end of the line explained what you're explaining. What a ridiculous explanation: set up PAD, wait for bill, receive an insuff funds or we weren't able to process message, call, pay by cc over the phone, then if should work next time. Lol.

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

Thank you for reaching out & posting your concern.

Based on the limited information that you have provided, I can only surmise, that your account was setup for pre-authorized payments prior to or at the same time as your purchase.

Unfortunately, I am not in a position to comment on what was explained to you. I can provide you with details as they relate to setting up pre-authorized payments.

"Both enrolling and removing the pre-authorization permission has a delay of one billing cycle before coming into effect." Bell processes your payment upon receipt. Bell does not process the payment in advance.

When you signed up for pre-authorized debit payments, you should have made a manual payment to be safe. If you overpay, your account will be credited & any overpayment will be applied to your next monthly bill. Do not adjust your pre-authorized payment.

One full bill cycle must pass before the automatic withdrawal will begin. For this reason, its recommended to always monitor your invoice and account, and if needed ensure payments are being made to avoid any past due balances or late fees.

Take care.
