I am using Windows Live Mail to download email to my sympatico.ca email account. Out of the blue, it stopped working last week. None of the settings were changed. Can't seem to receive email. Get the following message:
Unable to send or receive messages for the *******@sympatico.ca account. The connection to the server has failed.
Server: 'pophm.sympatico.ca'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: POP3
Port: 995
Secure(SSL): Yes
Socket Error: 10060
Any ideas?

That's not quite right. I am receiving Bell sympatico.ca emails on Thunderbird. I believe hat is happening is that Bell is no longer supporting POP3. If you switch to IMAP, you should be able to use the mail client of your choice.

Thanks, Gord. I did switch to IMAP on my Windows Live Mail, but it's still not working.

If the email will only be accessible from Webmail, then everyone's phone apps would stop working too! That would be a disaster. Using webmail on a phone is not ideal. And quite frankly, I think webmail is a lousy email reader

Hi - we have stopped being able to send and receive emails from sympatico.ca account. “Cannot send message using the server Sympatico. Connections to the server “smtphm.sympatico.ca” on the default ports timed out.
Any thoughts how to resolve?

Hello. I would like to add a bit to ESP's solution.
I have been in contact with Bell on this problem. I actually found someone that would take this and come back with a solution. What I have found out is that, according to the tech, Bell uses only TLS 1.2. 1.1 is no longer valid. He also pointed me to a Microsoft page here. This describes how to add support for TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2.
I have updated 2 Windows 7 SP1 machines. One following the directions on the Microsoft page entirely and one by not installing the MS suggested update (due to error trying to run the update) but did perform the rest of the instruction. Both computers are now successful in allowing Outlook to receive emails from the Bell server (original encryption error was on receive. Sending always worked).
In the end, what I believe to be the solution (but can't fully verify due to following the MS Update article) is that a registry entry has to be added on the affected Windows 7 SP1 computer for the TLS 1.2 protocol:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.1\Server]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000000
If it is true that Bell is not using the TLS 1.1 protocol any more, this registry entry should not have to be added.
Hopefully this will help others having the same problem.
This fix has affected 3 versions on Outlook on Windows 7 SP1 computers:
Outlook 2007 (as per ESP), Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013.
Hopefully this will help others...

I should point out that while the solutions may work, all of the software listed has reached End of Life and is no longer supported by Microsoft. Bell also does not normally support user software. Using user provided software solutions are used at your own risk.

I use a Sympatico email account as my main email identify. I have set up this account on my Apple iPhone and on my Apple iPad. Both devices can receive and send emails succesfully. However, changes made on one device e.g. delete an email are not synched through to the other device. Is there a Sympatico or Apple setting that will achive this?

" Are you using Apple Mail in both devices? Are both devices up to date? iOS, apps. Have you verified your mail account IMAP settings? POP? Are they the same? Are you using an email client? Have you done a complete power off / on for both devices?" - confirming that all of these requirements have been examined but problem persists.
