Missing wifi connections

I was recently connected to FIBE.  My desktop used to be connected to the modem with a cable.  Prior to that I had to use an amplifier as the modem was in the next room.  Streaming was not good so I used the cable.  If I wanted to see my Bell connection I would also see everyone else's nearby.  Now I only see "Network connected"  Nothing else.  Going to settings to see nearby connections does not change anything.  My laptop and smartphone see all connection points.  Furthermore I cannot disconnect the connection on the desktop.  I have reported this to Bell 3 times and they say they will escalate the problem... nothing happens.  They sent two technicians who told me they were not trained for this.  Any suggestions?

If you unplug your desktop Ethernet cable & setup a wireless connection you will once again see all available connections.  Now plug your ethernet cable back in to your computer & select. This will disable your wireless connection. You will now be able to see all connection options available to you. If you go to your Network Settings > Change adapter settings > You should see the Ethernet connected & the Wi-Fi disconnected.

This is a windows feature that allows the user to use a portable computer to move back & forth from wireless to a wired network. It serves little purpose on a stationary desktop PC unless your preference is wireless over a wired connection & you have plans on moving it around to a location that is not wired.

Enjoy.

If you are talking about SSID's, you can only see nearby SSID's that are not hidden, when using a WiFi connection.

You cannot see them when using a wired connection. A wired connection is normally always on. You can manually disconnect it by disabling the network adaptor under Windows. Disable network adaptors

I am not talking about SSID's.  I am talking about images such as a logo for the company sending me the email, or even a picture embedded in the email.

That would be graphics not downloading and appearing in your emails? That would possibly be related to your email client. It may not be connection related.

It might be graphs, logos or even pics.  It never happened until I was connected to FIBE.

Again, that would most likely be an issue with your e-mail client as opposed to your fibre optic connection.

Some thoughts:

  1. If you have a wifi card in your desktop PC, and use it, you will see all the nearby wifi connections (your neighbours) broadcasting their presence. These are the SSIDs referred to by @Vanadiel
  2. If you have an ethernet network card/adapter in your desktop PC, and use it, you will not see any nearby Bell connections.
  3. "Now I only see "Network connected" , is normal when connected using Ethernet. if you dig deeper you'll see the IP address assigned to your desktop PC and more.
  4. " My laptop and smartphone see all connection points". Again, if you're using wifi on these devices this is normal.
  5. You can disconnect the ethernet connection immediately by unplugging the ethernet cable.
  6. Graphics, pics, etc embedded in emails has nothing to do with your internet connection provided by Bell.

Bell doesn't provide tech support to devices connected to the Bell modem. Yet Bell sent techs to your home, who then told you "they were not trained for this". Trained for what?

I'm not understanding what the problem is.  I think we need you to provide more information!

Before I was connected to Fibe, I was connected to the Bell Modem/Router with a cable.  Before I was connected with a cable, I was using a "booster" as the wifi signal was not strong enough as I have a concrete wall between the modem/router and my desktop.  Now that Fibe has been installed, the modem/router is 3 rooms away and in order to get a signal to my desktop Bell has installed 3 boosters.  Since Fibe was installed I no longer see any other connections.  I oinly see one that is marked "Network connected".  What ever I do I cannot click and disconnect this.  I used to be able to do this when I saw Bell XXX.  As for the technicians they sent, they sent the usual techs that connect you to Fibe, not people who understand the technolgy behind all of this.

Where do you see this "network connected"? Are you connected wireless, or wired?

If you are connected wireless, there's no need to connect to "other connections". Are you trying to disconnect from your wireless network?

And what is the correlation with the missing graphs, logos or even pics in e-mails with regards to the above?

On the task bar there is an icon.  If one clicks on this, a panel opens showing all the connection points in the area including myy own.  Now I only see "Networks connected".  Previously I saw my network and others.  Also previously, if I wanted to disconnect I could.  Now I can not.  Also previously if I was disconnected I could opt for connect automatically or manually.  So far I have not had to do this.   As for the graphs etc, that is a second problem which I posted but the moderator merged the two.

Thank you for the clarification. You are describing, I believe, is a specific behaviour in Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft keeps changing how network connections are displayed, especially after program updates. I have the same issue and occasional frustration. What it appears you are describing is a how your internet connection is displayed on the task bar. The same is true of your second question about graphics disappearing. Unfortunately, they relate to third party software (Windows) behaviour, which may be beyond the scope of this forum. I suggest you try one of the many Windows forums out there for a more definitive answer.

Is it an icon that looks like a little monitor icon, or one that looks like the one on the right?

On the task Bar I have the icon on the left.  When I click it a page opens and shows

Network

connected.

Perhaps, but they all happened after I was connected to FIBE.  As for the connections that is only on my desktop.

You are describing normal Windows behaviour , it appears. The change is related to Microsoft updates and is, I believe, unrelated to Bell fibe services.
