Why can't I connect my phone to my brother printer ?

Thanks for your question. Can you say more? What is the make and model of your phone? What is the model of your Brother printer? Is it a wireless printer?

You will have to download Brother software from either the Apple or Google store, in order to connect your phone to your printer.

Is your printer connected to internet and are you using Bluetooth or wi-fi printing . Was wondering . I’ve had hard time printing before and was an error or network . What type of phone model or operating system do you have .

You have not said what the type of phone you have, but as you have a Brother printer, Brother has a printer utility available from their self serve support web site and the App Store (Apple) called iPrint&Scan which can be used for iPhones and iPads, Macintosh and Windows computers. It is not available for Android devices, however.  Brother's web site also has a lot of clear, direct, uncomplicated instructions for installing their printers on computers and devices. That is a good place to start, if you can't access the utility.
