Bell Galaxy Note20 5G, new 5G SIM Card, Plan is provisioned for 5G but I almost NEVER get 5G service. Once and a while i'll get 5G but 99% of the time it's LTE. A Coworker with the same phone, same provider has 5G all the time.
Missing a setting?

I ported into Bell towards the end of Dec 2023. Had Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra and now S24 Ultra, both equipped with 5G, bought directly from Samsung Canada.
For whatever reason, I am unable to get 5G speeds anywhere within Toronto and GTA. The max I would get is LTE+, but mostly LTE.
I tried all settings gimmicks that I have seen in this forum, but nothing has worked till now.

It means that your phone is selecting LTE as the better signal as opposed to 5G. There are many reasons for that including environmental, interference and other things. You might just let your phone do the heavy lifting. Much of 5G is advertising. I am not in the GTA, but my phone constantly switches between 5G and LTE and down to 3G. I let the phone do it's thing.

I understand about the phone picking it up. But the LTE doesn't even give the speed of 3G. So what's the point of having a5G network?

Hi
How do I get 5G+ on my S21Ultra 5G? I use an eSim with no Nano Sim card. I don't know anything about bands avaiable on my phone and in my town. Sylvan lake, Alberta 🤔

Thank you for your question. If you use any of the cell tower locator maps, you will find the frequency for each tower. Bell uses Telus towers west of Manitoba, as Telus uses Bell towers in the east. It appears Sylvan Lake has 5G service. There are other factors which can affect a cell signal, however.

Hi there, @FrozenPond. Thanks for your post.
Did you get your S21 Ultra from Bell or Virgin Plus, from another provider, or direct from the manufacturer?
Please bear in mind that if a phone is not bought directly from us, it is considered "grey market" and as such we're unable to guarantee quality of service.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Hello,
I bought it from a Bell franchise store. I was given a 17 dollar data plan of 10 Gb, back to school special, in late August 2021. I did buy it because I was happy with an S8 ( still works), but unable to be updated. I did want 5G, expecting expansion of the network, which did not really happen, we still have one tower , 3blocks from the house, yet no 5G signal.
We do have a larger town, near by, which did expand a bit. Calgary downtown is pretty good, no idea if it's 5G+, as it did not display that icon on the S21. The tower map claims it does exist, again unverified.
My phone is near new as it's been through 2 otter box covers. I paid the phone out, then switched to Koodo (cheaper plan), then Bell called and offer a good BYOP and I took it.
UI 6.1 is doing AI search by circling images, so people saying it doesn't work, are wrong 100%.
The biggest problem is network of 5G towers, Telus/Bell is severely under developed in Alberta. Koodo is really bad on the towers which Telus uses, donot go to Virgin or Koodo for 5G, the towers relegate customers to the bottom of the request stack.
I did work for Nortel for a year, then got a job in San Jose in tech sector (chip equipment). We supplied Samsung and they probably exist because of that company.
I don't think buying from Samsung will guarentee a network access, how would they know about our towers bands? Why not just supply your Canadian vendors with their current band channels, plus proposed bands. The CRTC has bandwidth auctions, which are public knowledge in Canada and probably the world.
Good luck.

I did a scan of towers in my town and it showed three towers now. I do know all 5G towers are not created equal and I have the data records to prove it. I would do some network research from credible sources and you will disover the rouse in the marketing boasts. I am amazed the CRTC hasnt stepped in to have some truthfull advertising standards, because it's really silly what they are doing on data transfer from tower to end user. 😉🇨🇦
