10G not working properly

Hello all!!

I have been a happy Bell internet customer for a while now (15+ years).  I just upgraded to the 3GB plan and the tech just came and installed the modem.  My desktop computer has a build in 2.5GB NIC, and I have a CAT6 cable from the 10GB port on the modem, and plugged directly into my 2.5GB card.  I am getting unexpectedly low download rates.  Ookla says my download is 140.07 Mb/s and upload is 881.22.14 Mb/s.

When I plug into one of the 1G ports I get better results.  When I plug my laptop into the 10GB port (it only has a 1G NIC) I get similar results as my desktop.

I have firmware version  1.16.5

I have tried removing the NIC from the device manager & updating the drivers.

While the tech was here we were not able to get it working.  The really weird thing is he even went and got another modem from his truck and it had the same result.  I have tested sppeds to the modem in the modem console page and the modem is getting 3GB+ speeds.

Are there any known problems with these ports? is there something I can do to fix this?

TIA

David

I am also improving download speed problem. But this happens when my network cable is plugged in the ten gig port. Ex : if my network device is connected to on the the 4 gig port behind the gigahub, i have dwnl speed aroumg 900 mb out of 1.5 gig internet connection which is ok on a gig network. But il my network device is connected to the 10 gig  port behind the gigahub, the dwnl speed drops to arout 400-500 mbits. I have try different network patch, and even try a cat8 patch cable witout difference.

What network card is used on the device?

Actually it is a 2.5 gig switch. When using the 2.5/5/10gig port on the modem directly connect to the switch, i see that the negociated speed  ont the switch is 2.5.g. There is nos error on the interfaces. I event try to manually set the speed on both interfaces (modem and switch) to 2.5gig full-duplex. The speedtest really suffer when connected with that port.

I think, going by what others have reported, that the 10G ports only supports link speeds of 10G and 1G. It does not look like it supports 2.5G or 5G connectivity.

You might want to look into a 1 Gbps link speed and see if that solves the speed drop.

the speed is "ok" when using 1g port on the modem, but the deal is to be able to take advantage of my 1.5 g internet acces and not only 1g out of 1.5. i buy my 2.5g network sw for that purpose

User experience shared here seems to suggest that 2.5/5GB network cards do not always work well with the 10Gb port on the Giga Hub. Your option is to use a 10 Gb network card and Cat 6 network cable. Otherwise you may be limited to the 1Gb connection speed.

i already have a cat8 network cable, what i need is to buy a 10g copper gbic and try if it is better.

Yes, a 10 Gb network card would likely work. I also set everything in the modem card settings to Auto.

Thank you will try that, and will let you know the results

Hi, with a 10 gig sfp in my switch connected with a cat8 cable to the 10 gig port on the modem did the trick. I don't have speed problem at all now.

Excellent news!

I upgraded to 3gps Bell Internet a few months ago. I tried connecting to the Giga Hub with a 2.5gps router and various 2.5gps switches, and then a 2.5gps switch with a 10G SFP+ module. But I always get gigabit speed. The 10G SFP+ negotiates fine with Giga Hub, but it is running gigabit, not 3gps or 2.5gps.

Does Giga Hub work with 2.5gps switches and routers at all? And if so, are there particular switches/routers that have proved to work with Giga Hub and achieves 2gps to 3gps speed connecting to it? If it only works with 10GbE switches/routers, any particular makes/models are good with it?

Thanks.

-----

Info: I tried the in-modem speed test, and it says a bit more than 3gps. So, the profile is fine. I tried all the options in Advanced Settings/Ethernet, only the 10G option works with the SFP+ (but runs in gigabit speed). Otherwise, the 2.5gps switches work fine with it, but in gigabit speed. All my tests were done connecting directly to the Giga Hub 10G port, or to a switch connecting to the 10G port. The cables I used are CAT6, CAT6A, CAT6E, all kind of markings, but all claimed to be CAT6. I tried different ones, always the same result. I also tried different 2.5GbE switches I have, all running gigabit with Giga Hub when connecting to the 10G on Giga Hub.

From the 2.5G switches to the router is fine, the router always shows a 2.5GbE interface. When the router was connected to the 10G on the Giga Hub, it would show 1GbE.

We don't recommend using 2.5 or 5 Gb network cards. They appear not to play well with the Giga Hub and only negotiate 1 Gb speed, as you have discovered. However, a 10 Gb network card and a Cat6 network cable will work

Thanks!

It looks like I will have to get a 10G switch then. I don't need a DMZ, but I guess I will have one soon. I run OpenWRT behind the Giga Hub because I like a bit of control over exactly how the home network is managed.

I have that setup. I have a 10 Gb card behind a 10 Gb unmanaged switch. I don't need a router, although the reports of PPPoE passthrough on the Giga Hub say it does work.
