Connecting Bell fibre directly to UDM SE with SFP+ and PPPoE

Has anyone connected directly to their router with an SFP and PPPoE or another method?  I'm looking for the right 10Gig SFP, but I'm not sure what one to get

I have a Ubiquitiy UDM SE gateway/router.  Currently I have a 10 Gig SFP+ to RG45 with a patch between it and the HH4K's 10G RJ45 port.  I'd like to eliminate the HH4K and go direct if possible.

thanks.

Adjusting the MTU. Not something I have heard for many years.

Woah, I appreciate this. I did the upgrade via early access and changed the MTU (called MSS clamping in the UI) - and the router had been green low latency for over 12 hours now.

I can still ping from my computer directly connected to the modem, and get those random spikes I mentioned above - but the UDM seems happy.

Now I wish I did the upgrade and MSS clamping changing at different times - to know what one actually fixed UDMs reports of high latency.

I spoke too soon; latency is back.

I have the 8Gig service and my Giga Hub is on 1.61 and I've tried three routers, Sophos XGS 210, UXG Pro and now on an 8200 series Netgate. In all cases, PPOE gets me about 2 up and 2 down (no latency). Double NAT gets me 7.7 or 8 up and down. ADMZ get's me about 5 up and down, but huge latency and packet loss spikes. So the firmware from Bell has not resolved the issue. I have found that using Bell's DNS servers versus 1.1.1.1 as the primary improved latency in all three connection scenarios. SO for now, I'm paying for 8 and getting 2.

GigaHub FW is a mess altogether. The whole device is cheaply made with little regard to performance or security.

Bell would only tell you you are getting 8Gb on the hub which if you tested it is probably the case. They don't care what would you use past this and tend to blame it on your own equipment, Been this road ....Their FL support is abysmal and would  make you powerycle endlessly the modem.

Provided you are using the 10Gb port on the modem going into another 10Gb port, you have a decent quality ethernet cable and a good SFP don't see why you wouldn't get the full speed.

I cannot speak for such a speed but with PfSense and Opnsense I was getting a full 1.5Gb which is my plan, Used exclusively PPPoE nothing else (Admz etc)

To whom it may concern:

Maybe bell could come back from 1999, stop using PPPoe which is a horrible protocol nvm the implementation on the actual hardware and give us DHCP or maybe a decent BridgeMode

I wonder if there are two separate issues here. Issue #1 is the configuration of your router. Bell won't help you with that as they don't support third party hardware. However, there is an experienced user community over on DSL Reports who have deep knowledge and possibly someone who has a similar configuration or insight into your issues. Once you have the configuration worked out, the techs in the Bell Direct forum may be able to help with your speed issue (presuming it is still happening). You will need to create an account on DSLR, but it's free. I've been around DSLR for 23 years. You can find the DSLR Bell Direct forum here. https://www.dslreports.com/forum/sympat

This problem would be easily solved if bell ditched PPoE and allowed DHCP, so we could all plug the SFP+ with full speeds without the PPoE mess.

Couldn’t agree more.

Hi @BellPatricia !
I'm in the same position as @DMot.

  • 3Gbps/3Gbps Gigahub
  • UDM Pro

I am a 3Gbps/3Gbps Gigahub Bell customer that is used to running my modem in "BridgedMode" and also running a UDM Pro controller/gateway console. I have tried running the modem in ADMZ but it doesn't work (likely because Giga Hub doesn't provide gateway/mask correctly by DCHP) Currently, I'm running as Double-Nat and getting top speeds, but all of my VPN and server functionality that I use on the UDMPro is now stuck before that double-nat.

I would be ecstatic if I can get this working with the same speeds, and without the double-nat.

You should be getting close to your ISP speed using a 10G SFP into the UDM's 10G port and the 10Gb port on the Hub.

Mind you the Hub is a mess as same as UDM.

UDM was plagued for years with a PPoE bug capping the speed but with their latest Fw it got better,

I am on a 1.5 plan and I am getting 1.3 using PPoE on the UDM no ADMZ nothing.Just with the SFP.Not talking about latency 😛

There is also a physical cap on the actual throughput on the UDM, forgot the exact number but you can easily find it on their forums.UDM is not a very powerful machine tbh, is pretty but not powerful.

If you have no other choice(like me) for ISP and want to keep the UDM then your best bet is to get an SFP and use it as instructed (here and there are many other posts on DSLReports)

Probably 3Gb...ish  is the best you will ever get  with the current hardware.

Alternatively can switch to an PfSense/OPNSense/ _insert NGFirewall name.  with a Cloudkey gen2(if you want to stay within the Unifi camp) and you will be getting full speeds ,you will have better chances for future speed upgrades and be shielded against Unifi FW shenanigans.

Good Luck

Nothing but great times with my UDM Pro here. Definitely all my issues so far are with the ISP and their hardware. I’m currently getting peak speeds on UDM Pro with double nat. Just don’t want to dblnat. Makes VPN a PINA. I can’t get ADMZ at all but I assume it would give lower speed as per others.

Can you clarify your setup on both the UDM PRO and the Bell Giga Hub in order to get the full speeds you have in your screen shot

Please note: I am not a very savvy network person so if you can make your instructions clear it would be help full.

FYI: just purchased my UDM PRO and in the current process of upgrading my 1.5GB Down and 1GB up to 3GB both up and down.

THanks

Hi @gponcho  - I'll give this a shot for you.

Note, I'm using a UDM Pro Special Edition (SE).

I'll include some screenshots if that's helpful but in words, where is my configuration:

1. The Bell Giga Hub is up and running with nothing plugged into it other than the bell fibre and the 10Gbps LAN port, with a CAT6E or better cable connecting the10Gbps LAN port to a SFP+ 10Gbps RJ45 adapter is the one I use.  The adapter is plugged into one of the WAN ports on the UDM Pro SE.

2. The configuration of the Bell Giga Hub is default and not using DMZ or ADMZ (it's in double NAT - Network Address Translation) mode.
 Screenshot 1 - Gigahub.png

3. The SFP+ (10 Gbps RJ45 adapter) is setup with default configuration on the UDM Pro SE.

Screenshot 1 - UDM Pro SE Ports.png

4. The Internet configuration on the UDM Pro SE is default.  I've customized the DNS but you can leave that all to Auto if you don't need to custom DNS.  I do this to use OpenDNS and configure restrictions for my kids on our network.  If you don't use it, just leave Advanced as "auto".

Screenshot 3 - UDM Pro SE Internet configuration.png

5. On the LAN side of things, if you wish to get better than 1Gbps, you'll need a 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps or even 10Gbps adapter and another SFP+ to RJ45 unless you wish to use fibre optics.  I have this adapter from OWC. This adapter is connected directly via CAT6 cabling to my UDM Pro SE, into a LAN port with an SFP+ adapter.

6. You can see that my MacBook Pro with the 10Gbps thunderbolt adapter achieves great speeds.

Screenshot 3 - Speedtest.net examples from MacBook Pro.png

The UDM Pro SE's internal speed test isn't always as fast, depending on the server it connects to.  Speedtest.net is like that too.  Sometimes I connect to a very fast Bell server and get 8100Gbps or more both ways.

Here is the UDM Pro SE's test tonight (not as fast as the MacBook Pro).

Hopefully that helps.  I'd love to do the following someday:

1. Run ADMZ and get a public IP on my UDM Pro SE without latency or packet loss (I've tested and that's what I get now).

OR

Run PPPoE passthrough from the Bell Giga Hub and get full throughput - today I only get about 1 or 2Gbps speeds.

2. Connect the Bell fibre directly to the UDM Pro SE with a 10Gbps GPON fibre adapter.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

I forgot to mention that with the double NAT, your UDM will get a private IP address from the Bell Giga Hub (mine got 192.168.2.11).  It doesn't matter what the address is as long as the Giga Hub provides an IP to it.    The 192.168.44.x address is just my internal private network's IP for the UDM Pro.

Thanks for your information it is greatly appreciated.  A couple of questions if I may;

1. It seems that your pictures did not come through, I cannot see them

2. You mentioned you have the UDM PRO SE.   Should I replace the UDM PRO with the SE or is the UDM PRO fine? ( I can still return the UDM PRO and get the SE version if it is needed although it is more expensive)
