Giga Hub Advanced DMZ Issue - Wired connection to ASUS Router keeps disconnecting

Hi there,

I recently signed up for Bell's 3Gb/s plan. I wish to setup my Giga Hub as a passthrough to my ASUS RT-AC3200 router for now. I'm aware that the 3200 is only a gigabit router but I want to get this working for now while I shop for a 10Gb switch and/or a newer ASUS router, since everything in my home is already configured via the ASUS router, and most devices on my network do not need (or could even use) the very fast connection. I plan on upgrading my NICs and connecting 1 or two computers to a 10Gb switch in the near future, to utilize the 3Gb/s speed. As to why I want to use an external router, I like the advanced functionality/customization of it, and the ease of transition to a newer model of ASUS router. As I understand it, there is no dedicated "Bridge" mode on the GH, and the options are PPPoE or DMZ. I couldn't find a way to put the GH into PPPoE (and I've read some reports that PPPoE is not always ideal and causes more problems), so I've been trying to use Advanced DMZ.

What I have done so far:

  1. Plugged my ASUS 3200 router into the 10Gb port on the Giga Hub.
  2. Found the ASUS router MAC address and enabled Advanced DMZ in the Giga Hub interface for it.
  3. When I check the ASUS interface, the Giga Hub's WAN IP shows the same WAN IP as the Giga Hub. So far so good...

The problem: Every minute or so, the ASUS interface (which shows the WAN connection and associated WAN IP address) will randomly show that the WAN is disconnected. It then promptly reconnects within a few seconds only to disconnect again within a minute or so. The cycle repeats continuously. Because of this, the internet is basically unusable.

The good:

  1. I am getting the full 3Gb/s Down/Up when testing through the GH's web interface.
  2. When attempting a speed test on my computer (via the ASUS router and a computer that has a gigabit NIC), one of two things happens:
    a) The Download speed is in the 900Mb/s+, as expected (again, only a gigabit router and NIC on the computer at the moment), the upload test fails completely (likely because the internet has disconnected, per the problem above) Or,
    b) If the test is initiated immediately after one of it's disconnects/reconnects, the Download and Upload speeds both test ok and are in the 900Mb/s+ range, again, as expected.

What I've tried so far:

  1. Rebooting the ASUS router and Giga Hub
  2. Resetting the GH to factory defaults, signing in again with my b1... username/password and setting up the Advanced DMZ again, and rebooting both ASUS router and GH.
  3. Disabling all WiFi on the GH.
  4. Disabling UPnP, DLNA, and SIP ALG on the GH.
  5. Disabling QoS on the ASUS router.
  6. Was going to assign a Reserved IP on the GH for the ASUS router but the current local IP address of the ASUS is out of range of the available addresses? (I remember reading somewhere that when Advanced DMZ is enabled for a particular device, in this case my ASUS router, that setting a Reserved IP is not needed as the "raw" internet connection is passed through to the ASUS router anyways? I was wondering if the GH keeps refreshing the DHCP/Lease time and hence causes the disconnects to the ASUS router, but maybe that's not the case?)

The GH's firmware version is 1.14.1. I have read in other posts with somewhat similar problems that there are newer firmware versions available now? If someone at Bell could please kindly reach out via PM for further support, and to push the newer firmware to my GH, that would be much appreciated.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for anyone and everyone's help and input regarding this.

@ConnectionTry explicitly set the NIC speed to 1G full duplex or 10G full duplex if you have a 10G NIC. Don't use Auto.

Get the same issue each time the GH restart, power outage or else. The workaround I have is to, when this happen, disable ADMZ, save, and enable back ADMZ and save.

I also had similar issues to this with my netgear Orbi which has an incoming speed of 2.5G

I had to make sure the port speed on the GH matched this at 2.5G (the default “auto” setting most certainly did not work)

Hi @Connection

To resolve ADMZ problems between your router and the Giga Modem, I suggest you post your specific issue on the Bell subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/bell/

Re the firmware update, you need to make a specific request that it be pushed to your modem, here .

Cheers,

ZaneP

@ZaneP Thank-you kindly for your response. I have posted on the Bell Reddit now. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks @equinox for your suggestion. I will give that a go and report back. If I'm understanding you correctly, this is on the NIC settings of the computer which is plugged into the ASUS router, correct?

I have also set 1Gb and Full Duplex on the Bell modem for the LAN port that the ASUS router is plugged into. I'm assuming that's also good?

Firmware has been updated to 1.16. No dice. Same issue persists.
