HH4000 - media server off USB or Ethernet, and storages options for either connection

Last time I tried a media server was off an ASUS router with the ISP's device in bridge mode.

A decade later, to help us quit TV, I'd love to put some of our owned media on a server through the HH4000.

USB (3.0) or the 10Gbe? Pros and cons either way.

But - if you're going to answer USB vs 10Gbe, help a fella out with recommended storage devices? Is there a max storage size? Speed? Latency? All the things if 1 or 2 people will be hitting it at the same time.

Hi @Yo_its_Jaron

"But - if you're going to answer USB vs 10Gbe.."

Neither.

Just a few things you should consider:

  • a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, ethernet-connected to your HH4K. One of the 1Gb ports will be fine.
  •  Do you have a $ figure in mind for hardware?
  • The "maximum" storage size is driven by how much media you need to store (including room for expansion as the collection grows), AND
  •  what you're willing and able to spend.  You can get drives from 4TB to 20TB.
  • You can get a purpose-built NAS such as Synology, QNAP, Asustor, etc, OR
  • you can repurpose an old computer, or build one out, as a NAS. Lots of YouTube videos on how to do this.
  • Media server software to install on the NAS can be proprietary (Plex) or free/open source (Jellyfin).
  • Two people simultaneously streaming media from a server is not a heavy load.

Personally, I have Plex running on a Synology NAS.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck with your project!

Cheers,

ZaneP
