Slow data speeds in Port Elgin, NB

I just recently came back to Bell from a competitor but the speeds in Port Elgin, NB are still very slow. The other companies that share the tower have the same issues. This has been an issue for many years here. Any way we can look into what’s wrong with the tower?

Hi there @Raptorial ,

Welcome to the community and thanks for your post.

For the community to be better able to assist you, could you please provide further details as to the issues you're experiencing?

Do keep in mind that many factors can limit signal strength; topography, environmental conditions, line of sight to towers, types of buildings in your area, etc.

  • Have you tried changing the network settings in your phone? Sometimes setting your phone to force 4G / LTE instead of 5G can stabilize your reception.
  • Are the issues only happening indoors at home and/or at work, or outdoors as well?
  • Have you tried using Wi-Fi callingOpens in a new tab or window if you're experiencing issues with phone calls where available?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
  • Have you gotten in touch with our technical support team to open a ticket?

You may also find our How To article Troubleshooting voice calls on your Bell Mobility phoneOpens in a new tab or window helpful. We'd also recommend checking out our How To article on Troubleshooting data connectivity on your Bell Mobility phoneOpens in a new tab or window

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks for your question. BellAntgio 's comments are worth checking out. I would also add that providers may be having a hard time keeping up. If you want to see where the cell towers are, my favourite cell tower map may be of interest.

I am not the only one having issues in the area. I know multiple people with the same issue. Sometimes it will connect with one bar of signal which is faster (100 down and 5 up) but when it connects to the stronger signal tower it is very slow.

I tried all these troubleshooting steps already as I had this issue with Bell, Telus, Virgin, Lucky, Koodo and Public Mobile. Before I moved away from Bell more than 10 years ago I tried to bring it up with technical support but never went anywhere. The Roger’s tower that is next to the Bell tower does not have this issue but the Roger’s tower is 5G.

Even getting physically close to the tower does not alleviate the problem. I live only about 1/2 a kilometer away but I can get within a stones throw and it will still be the same.

Right now I’m kinda being led to believe the tower may be overloaded or not working properly as everyone I know that is on the Bell/Telus tower has this issue in the area.

I may contact tech support again to see what they say currently though, phone calls don’t seem to be effected and Bell has the most coverage in the area overall so I’d like to stick with Bell.

Thanks for your follow-up. You are likely correct. The towers may be overcapacity. I see that issue in cottage areas of Ontario every summer. Unfortunately we do not have access to Bell’s network engineering or plans, so there is nothing more we can add. I know it does take a couple of years to put up a new cell tower because of Industry Canada approvals, supply chain requirements, local planning and construction matters and more. Cell frequencies are auctioned and assigned by Industry Canada. One provider may have more than another. It’s not a simple issue nor a quick solution.
