Hey there @jnj37, thanks for your post and welcome to the Bell Community.
If you're within your area code you can retrieve messages by dialing your phone number, and then press 9 as soon as you hear your greeting.
If you're travelling outside of your area code, when accessing voice mail you will need to dial 1 877 BELL-777 (1 877 235-5777).

To listen to your voicemail when you are outside of Canada, dial your phone number and when the greeting plays press 5 and enter your password.
For example, if you are in Europe & you want to call Canada to check your Home phone voice mail, whether dialing from a mobile phone or landline:
- Dial 00, (Europe international access code), or enter + from any mobile phone.
- Dial 1, (the country code for the US and Canada.)
- Dial the phone number, including area code.
- When the greeting plays press 5
- Enter your password.

Your proposed solution absolutely does not work, and even your technical support (two teams on phone for 20 minutes) said the only way to access my home voice mail using my mobile phone was to use (I believe) an 877 number, then when prompted my home phone number, then my password. A total of 24 characters to check my voice mail! Rather archaic wouldn’t you say? Sadly, I had just switched my provider to Bell, and I just had Fibe installed. Since then, nothing but problems with phones and tv.

Have you used Call Answer before? Is this a new Home phone feature that you setting up for the first time? If so, I have included the following web link that will explain Call Answer & how to set it up & use it.
How to use Call Answer on my Bell Home phone : What is Call Answer?
To retrieve messages from another phone within your area code:
- Dial your telephone number.
- When you hear your greeting, press 9 immediately.
- Enter your password.
- Follow the prompts to retrieve your messages.
The password you set up for the first time should be 4 to 15 digits and cannot start with 0. Avoid passwords that are too simple, such as 1234 or the last four digits of your phone number.
You can not enter a letter or special character password from a key pad such as an iPhone. You can use alpha, numeric & special characters in Text, emails, etc. The * and # keys are special keys on the keypad that are used for specific functions such as network signalling.
You can also set up your Home phone voice mail retrieval as a contact for easier & faster access to Call Answer
Should you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Bell Community Forum.
Take care.
