Are Sympatico accounts safe to use?

I have a Sympatico email account.  Years ago we got notice that it was stolen from bell along will all the other Sympatico account in a data breach and that these accounts ended up on the "dark web".  I got notice from Bell to change my password ASAP.  I now change my passwords semi regularly. My question is; are the Sympatico accounts now safe to use?  How does the security on Sympatico compare to the major email providers? Does bell no longer provide email accounts because of the security risk?

Good Day.

Bell still supports existing email accounts. It no longer provides any further additional email accounts.

I can only surmise that Bell has stopped based on the relative cost to delivering this service.

Your Sympatico email account is as safe as any other email account. If you are unsure of this, then yes by all means change your passwords on a regular basis. This in itself will prevent a scammer or fraudster from accessing your account.

This will not stop a fraudster or scammer from trying to steal from you. They will continually try to trick you in to believing they are legitimate. Phishing is on the rise. Attempts to steal sensitive information, typically in the form of usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, bank account information or other important data in order to utilize or sell the stolen information is not decreasing.

How does the security on Sympatico compare to the major email providers? That is judgmental question that I cannot answer. I can only offer up the following for you to make that decision.

Bell email has an easy-to-use interface. It includes sufficient email storage. You can access it online by going to www.bell.net or bell.ca/webmail. It has enhanced security:

  • An ad-free inbox, etc.
  • Email anti-virus protection
  • Junk email filter for spam
  • Mail options for blocked & safe senders, security setting, etc.
  • Block images, etc.
  • Tech support.

Hopefully this has been of assistance to you.

Thank you for posting your question.

Take care.
