Connecting Bell fibre directly to UDM SE with SFP+ and PPPoE

Has anyone connected directly to their router with an SFP and PPPoE or another method?  I'm looking for the right 10Gig SFP, but I'm not sure what one to get

I have a Ubiquitiy UDM SE gateway/router.  Currently I have a 10 Gig SFP+ to RG45 with a patch between it and the HH4K's 10G RJ45 port.  I'd like to eliminate the HH4K and go direct if possible.

Thanks, but I think there is some confusion. I have already researched that question, the XGSPON module goes into the managed switch into the 10G SFP+ port, the XGSPON has already established connection with Bell, then it gives the signal to to the switch, Mikrotik get the signal from the Ethernet port of the switch. Then Mikrotik makes the PPPoE connection to the Bell.. This is the setup I am building, now only waiting for the switch to arrive. This setup was confirmed by information I read on internet, including the seller for the switch. Anyways, I am going to experiment. If you can also point me to the converter you mentioned, I would appreciate it. And for the login, no need for Atbell.ca?

Never tried it like that, but the connection is only established once PPPOE is enabled.

I don't think any of the ports of the switch will get anything until PPPOE has been established, which you would have to do from within the switch.

It will look like the above picture. Will be interesting to see if you get it to work.

Thanks for the screenshot. I will give the feedback shortly, the switch is on the way to me already. What's the model of your Mikrotik? Mine has only SFP 1G port, so it doesn't work with the XGSPON module, therefore I was looking for the cheaper solution instead of buying the new Mikrotik. Actually my Mikrotik has all I need except for the SFP+ port. If I don't get it working via the switch, I'll need to either buy a new Mikrotik with sfp+ port or look for the converter you were telling, but strangely I didn't see the converter solution when I was looking how and where to connect the Xgspon module. Actually, when Mikrotik connects to the switch, the signal from Mikrotik goes to the Xgspon module via the switch, and then Mikrotik establishes the PPPoe connection to the XGSPON module. So it should work.

RB5009 from Mikrotik works without a problem for bypassing the HH3000, I am assuming it would work equally well for bypassing the HH4000 when using a third party PON solution.

I don't know what they sync at, but if you plan on using the UDM it can only sync at 1 or 10 Gbps, so your speeds might suffer if using that option.

The RB5009 can sync at various other speeds without an issue. The PPPOE overhead would be the only issue that cold hold you back there.

Hi, I got it finally running the way I described, even took me experiments with different settings, but it does work. Let me describe the setup: Xgspon module with 8311 firmware, managed switch from Aliexpress (Nikestore), Mikrotik router. Xgspon goes into SFP+ port on the switch (port 6), out of port 1 on the switch a cable goes into Mikrotik router. Switch is set to trunk modes on ports 6 and 1, so it is a transparent mode between ports 1 and 6. On Mikrotik, I run pppoe client with bells credentials. Initially I tied VLAn35 to my wan, but I found out that it is not needed, with VLAN35 now disabled it runs and connects without issues. So I understand Bell runs it without VLAN35, which is not what I have read everywhere on the forums. But it works. The easiest was to setup the Xgspon module, bthe most difficult is the switch and mikrotik, because I had to experiment with different settings to find it working...

That's an odd setup to be honest. Trunk modes are used to tag VLAN traffic, so it's odd you had to trunk both port 6 and port 1.

Is there anything else connected to the switch besides the Mikrotik router?

It's October 2025 and I just set up a third party router with PPPOE in Ontario my dude, I don't think you had to do all that

Haven’t tried again lately, but I think reliability and actual vs expected speed were key factors.

Thanks for your thoughts. If you are using PPPoE passthrough from the Giga Hub, you don't need complexity. Some are satisfied with that while others are not and choose a different solution.

• no Double-NAT
• same reliability
• same speeds

You don't have to be lost. Nor does this have to be complex. I found good information searching on "installing gigahub router passthrough" . There are some things that aren't accurate such as you can't put the Giga Hub into "bridge mode", at least not on Bell Canada territory, but there is lots of good information and videos to sift through. Users report your criteria are met, but again, it depends on the user.

When last I looked I spent a good few days looking up PON hardware and Bell regulations on using one for residential contracts etc. Granted this was before AI, but I'm reluctant to fire up that effort again until I can see clear details on how it can actually be done, within reasonable efforts and money, with the mentioned outcome. 
Until then, I must cry and be ok with my Double-NAT 🤢 but blazingly fast 3Gbps connection.

Yes, the PON Wiki is useful, but it requires a higher level of familiarity with aspects of computer networking than many users have and the purchase of additional hardware. Bell does not support the changes suggested there. There is also no information, at least that I can see, for the Giga Hub 2.0.
