IP Address does not match my Geographical location

Since a couple of weeks ago, my IP address is displaying as my location as "London, ON", whereas I am physically located outside of Ottawa, ON.  While the internet itself is fine, this 600 km difference seems to mean that I am not getting the desired sports coverage as a result of regional coverage... the wrong blackout information is being applied.

Note that I don't have or have never used any kind of IP manipulating software/VPN... I am getting this information from lookup sites like "whatismyip", etc.

Is this something that is within my ability to change?  Without having to 'trick' sites to believing my IP is something else?  No shenanigans; just want it to be accurate so I can get my regular sports back (which has been fine since moving here, about 2 years ago)...

Any suggestions are appreciated!

We are using Bell wireless home internet, everything was bought in Canada, no US subscriptions, everything was good until a few weeks ago and now the apps think we are in the US.  No VPN, only when we access from home through the Bell modem.  Works okay at home, if we use cellular, not wifi.

We have to unplug our modem 10-15 times a week to reset it because the speed gets so slow.  Reset doesn’t change anything.

let me make this clear.

This thread has at least dozens of explanations on what is happening, and what the issues are.

We are all aware cell phones and internet are different networks. We are all telling you that the cell services work, because they are identifying our physical location correctly.  The internet locations are NOT correctly identifying our location correctly.  Users in Toronto are NOT in London. Users in Haliburton are NOT in Ottawa.

Being told to contact the NHL about blackout regions is ridiculous, because the INTERNET PROVIDER doesn't seem to know where their subscribers are physically located.

This is 2025. Please Read this thread, look at a map, and escalate this issue to resolution.

The problem with Geo IP's is that it's not a good system in the first place, which is the reason why you see these issues pop up.

This is inherent for any network that uses dynamic IP addressing, and the results can be hit and miss.

More here.

It sounds simple to fix, but it's actually not simple at all.

@BellPatricia

Thank you for the additional information. If you are using WHI, I have to wonder if you have a weak signal due to a poorly aligned antenna or the modem not working properly. You may also have a weak signal. There is a large hole in Bell's towers between Listowel and Mitchell. I suggest you call 1-800-310-2355 and speak to tech support. Be as clear as you can about your issue.

I appreciate that. Technology can be complicated. It's still been years of the same issue, in this very thread, with no resolution. Same questions are asked and answered repeatedly. If they can't support this, perhaps they should consider no longer offering NHL specialty packages for premium subscription charges, that their subscribers cannot reliably view.

I am using the Bell Fibe App on my laptop and Smart TV. Using E-Box and my IP Location is Montreal.

Thank you for your question. Ebox’s servers are located in Montreal and internet connections are routed through Montreal . This is a legacy of Ebox’s origins as a Quebec-based ISP.

Found a work around (At least with TSN. a subsidiary of bell media IRONICALLY).Sign in on TSN site or app with Bell info and VOILA, regional restriction is gone.

Recently my ISP(internet service provider) changed my ip address. Now I get that error message when trying to watch Fibe TV online that says I am outside Canada. I have GEO Located my IP and it definitely geolocates me to Windsor Ontario. Perhaps Bells IP database has my IP as being in a foreign country? I have to use my VPN and use a Canadian connection to watch tv. There must be a fix for this as its nothing that I am doing or my computer is doing. The problem is definately on Bells end. Here is info about my ip....

mnsi.jpg

 and just to be sure a second geo location using another site:

My IP Location Information
City: Windsor
State/Region: Ontario
Postal Code: NXX XXX
Country: Canada
ISP: Managed Network Systems Inc.
ASN: 7057
Time Zone: UTC -05:00

What should I do now, call Bell techs? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for your question. IPs are assigned automatically and it may or may not be able to be changed easily.

Yes, we are still having issues.  Today it says we are Wasaga Beach not Brussels, ON.  But at least it says I’m in Ontario.  It’s only off by 136 kms.
