IP Address does not match my Geographical location

Since a couple of weeks ago, my IP address is displaying as my location as "London, ON", whereas I am physically located outside of Ottawa, ON.  While the internet itself is fine, this 600 km difference seems to mean that I am not getting the desired sports coverage as a result of regional coverage... the wrong blackout information is being applied.

Note that I don't have or have never used any kind of IP manipulating software/VPN... I am getting this information from lookup sites like "whatismyip", etc.

Is this something that is within my ability to change?  Without having to 'trick' sites to believing my IP is something else?  No shenanigans; just want it to be accurate so I can get my regular sports back (which has been fine since moving here, about 2 years ago)...

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Good Day.

The Florida Panthers vs. Ottawa Senators game that is currently scheduled this afternoon & is being played in Ottawa is not available in this region due to broadcasting restrictions imposed by the NHL Hockey League.

The decision on which NHL games are shown is not within the control of Bell. The National Hockey League (NHL) decides on which blackouts:

  • Are required and determined by the NHL
  • Enforced by the broadcast networks
  • Executed by the cable and satellite service providers

Every television service provider in North America, including Bell TV, must comply with the same blackout rules. These rules can vary from team to team.

Your question may be better answered if you redirect it to the NHL.

Thank you for posting your question.

Take care.

Good Day.

Thank you for updating the community.

You are obviously far more conversant & knowledgeable than I am in terms of what can or cannot be viewed, When I posted my earlier reply to you, I did verify that the Florida Panthers vs. Ottawa Senators game that was scheduled Saturday afternoon was not being shown on TSN 5 due to regional broadcasting restrictions. This was not a “pre typed msg.” You asked a question. I answered it as best I could with the limited information requested that you did not provide.

I will leave this with you:

  1. Which Bell TV service do you subscribe to? Fibe TV, Fibe TV App, or Satellite?
  2. Which TV package do you subscribe to? Starter, Good, Better, or Best?
  3. How are you trying to access the local Ottawa NHL TSN games? TSN, etc.
  4. Are you using a Premium subscription service such as: TSN+, NHL Centre Ice, TSN1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & TSN 4K, etc.
  5. Does your Bell TV package include TSN?

Are you logging in to Fibe TV App with your MyBell credentials?

Take care.

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

It is somewhat difficult to answer your question based on the lack of information that you have provided. I will do my best to try to answer your question with the details you have provided. Can you provide us with some further information?

  • Which Bell TV service do you subscribe to? Fibe TV or the Fibe TV App.
  • Do you have a VPN?
  • Are you accessing Fibe TV from at home or from another location?
  • How many devices do you currently have registered?
  • Are you trying to watch the Ottawa Senators Hockey game in a region that is blacked out? (You may not be able to watch the Ottawa Senators because of regional blackouts, which are based on where you live.)

When streaming Fibe TV and the Fibe TV app using a Wi-Fi network other than your home network, please note these limits:

  • Fibe TV: Up to three devices can stream, but only one can watch live TV at any given moment.
  • Fibe TV App: A maximum of two devices can stream simultaneously; however, only one can watch live television.

If need be, you can easily remove a device in the menu section of the Bell Fibe TV app. Please note, once a device is removed you will need to wait thirty days before you can add it back.

Fibe TV app service:

  • When connected to your home Bell Wi-Fi, you can have two devices watching content simultaneously and unlimited devices registered.
  • When not connected to your home Bell Wi-Fi, you can have two devices watching content simultaneously and five devices registered. A maximum of two devices can stream simultaneously; however, only one can watch live television.

Thank you for your question. The reason you can watch the game on your phone but not on your computer is because fibre and cell service are two separate networks, well above your local computer and Giga Hub. Each device is assigned an IP identifier. They are defined by geography. If your cell phone has an IP outside of the blackout zone for the game you want to watch, you can watch the game. If the computer's IP is inside the blackout zone, you can't watch the game on any device. This is a quirk of Bell's network. No one can change it. Perhaps enjoy the service while you can.

Blackouts are a restriction put in place by the league and the owners through legal contracts. They are not Bell's doing. Nor can Ball change blackouts. All broadcasters must comply with the blackout restrictions in order to broadcast sports. If you don't like blackouts, direct your complaints to the league and to the owners.

  • i am using the bell fibe tv app as i am using my phone and chromecast to watch.
  • no i do not have a vpn
  • from a different location
  • i have 4 devices registered
  • no as i stated i can watch the game on my phone but if i switch to my chromecast or my pc i can not watch it, even if i de register my phone

i am well aware of how blackouts are set, as i stated i am using my wifi to watch the game so therefore the cell services are not being used

I am not sure I was clear. You have two different networks. One does blackouts and the other does not. You said you could watch the game on your cell but not your PC. Is this reversed now?

Make this make sense Bell.

I have 3 devices in the same room attempting to watch my LOCAL team on TSN or RDS. The Bell apps on my phone and TV tell me I am unable to watch the scheduled program in my region (code 1012A). No issue with watching the match on my phone app.... All the devices are within a 10 metre radius and I don't live near any borders. We pay too much for this absolute nonsense of a product. Not to mention every other week there's a connection issue with my receivers. DO BETTER BELL!!

Hi there @Jay14

Thank you for reaching out to the Bell community 🙂

Are you using Bell Fibe TV or Satellite, and are you connected via Bell internet or through a different provider? Can you check your IP location and let us know what it says?

Hope to hear from you soon,

@BellPatricia

We live an hour North of London, ON but starting about Nov 1st, all location services over our Bell wifi connection, shows us as being in the USA.  We have to watch some apps over the cell network because that’s all it works on.  Disney+, Crave and some of AppleTV won’t work.
is there a way for me to manage our location?

Thank you for your question. Can you be more specific about your service? Is this fibre? Cellular? Wireless home Internet? The easiest way to change your IP, which gives your location, is to reboot your modem. You can do that by unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for 5 to 10 minutes and plugging the modem in again.  This forces a reconnection and a new IP. Did your TV come from the US? Are your Disney and Crave accounts from the US? Please say more about what you are seeing on screen when you want to watch a service or program.

  • Tell us more about the device you are using to access your Wi-Fi network from at home. Was it purchased in Canada? Have you verified the account and region on the streaming device that you are using is shown as: Canada
  • Do you have a VPN?
  • Are you accessing your Fibe TV & Bell Streaming services from at home or from another location?
  • If none of the above applies, please go to your modem and unplug the power cord. Leave it unplugged for approximately 5-10 minutes, then plug it back in to your power source

Let us know.

Take care.
