I received a call from Bell offering me a 30% discount on my services as well as a new iPhone. The scammer had all my personal information and sent me emails with the Bell logo.
when I called Bell to verify the offer I was told that my Bell account had been hacked. What responsibilities does Bell have if they failed to safeguard my account information?

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

Next time, please hang up! This was not Bell calling you. How about a scammer, a fraudster, a thief trying to gain access to your personal information.

Do not call them back. There is no reason for you to talk to them at all. Fraudsters call potential victims claiming to be from their service provider. They offer a promotion or deal so lucrative they cannot pass it up. The fraudsters proceed to ask for the victim’s personal information including their Social Insurance Number (SIN) and Driver’s License number, credit card, passwords, etc.

If you have been hacked as you suggest, you should change your MyBell & your email account passwords as soon as possible. You now need to figure out how to avoid a similar situation from ever happening again!

Remember one thing .... Do not give out anything to anyone you do not know or trust! Do not share personal information. Do not open links or messages in emails or text messages!

If in doubt, call Bell!

Reputable companies such as Bell, banks, utilities & highly regarded services & institutions do not send you messages or make calls such as this! They do not call you asking to provide personal information. Hang up! Report the fraud! & Delete!

Please have a look at the following web link. I am hoping you will find something new in this document that will be of benefit to you.

i just received a call from +1 (866) ***-****

stating to be bell and saying they can give me a better deal on how much i pay. i had a feeling it was a scam so i asked “how much do i pay now?” and they started to get flustered. i hung up and blocked. I recommend app Hiya - it detected it as general spam.

Kudos to you! Thank you for sharing this with the Bell Community.

Bell uses several technologies, including Suspicious Call Detection to reduce spam calls. Bell does not employ Call Control for Spam calls.

Suspicious call detection uses AI analytics to monitor incoming calls in real time, and it alerts you about potential spam or fraud, allowing you to decide whether to answer incoming calls by labelling the suspicious ones.  It is automatically available for all Bell Mobility customers at no extra charge and cannot be turned off.

While the feature only identifies potential spam or fraud, you have the option to block specific phone numbers directly through the call settings on your device.

When you receive a call from a suspicious and unknown number, your device will display a warning label to help you decide whether to answer:

  • Likely Fraud – calls deemed highly suspicious and fraudulent
  • Possible Spam – calls that appear suspicious but are more likely to be categorized as unsolicited

Note: Exercise caution when answering calls with these labels.
