But if it's not supported then why on my vpn application I don't need to select the option: use small packets for it to work? Or unless we're not talking about the same case at this level.

I think your Giga modem supports Baby Jumbo frames only, which would allow you 1500 MTU configured on your own router. PPPoE connection.
