I was checking my cell phone bill and wonder why it doesn’t show the phone numbers just says unknown? Wonder how I can change that to show.

Thank you for your question. Not all calls and texts sent include the identifying information to allow your phone to identify the sender. Some specific examples of excluded identifiers in Canada are police services, certain government services, hospitals and schools. This also applies to senders who use Call Block. Senders from outside Canada also hide that information for less than honest reasons. Unfortunately there is nothing which can be done about it. The system only transmits what it receives.

Hi there @Waswarae ,

Welcome to the Bell Community, and thanks for your post.

Could you clarify as to which numbers are saying that they're unknown? Are these the numbers attached to your own account, or are you looking at usage details for outgoing and/or incoming calls? Do bear in mind that as a matter of privacy protection, details such as phone numbers for incoming calls and messages will not be visible in your usage details.

Furthermore, when viewing your bill are you doing so via the MyBell app or by logging into MyBell in a web browser? If in the MyBell app, could you try in a web browser instead? And vice versa if viewing from a web browser. If in the app, we'd also recommend making sure you have the most up to date version by deleting and reinstalling the app to your device of choice.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Does anyone know why under your data usage when you are looking at texts and calls, it doesn't show the phone number, just says unknown

Hello @dks,

I understand all the privacy things, but in my usage it looks like a text conversation or exchange, on top, the unknown are double all other text number, together, and all outgoing?

I must be doing something wrong?

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

You are not doing anything wrong. You can verify all of your call detail on MyBell. If a number can be linked to an inbound or outbound call, it will show up. If it is masked, hidden, etc. you will not see the number in your usage.

If you so desire, your device keeps a record of all of your calls up until the point when you decide to delete your history. Have a look at it before you delete.

As @dks mentioned there are any number of reasons in today's world for the number not to show up on voice calls.

  1. Privacy is just one example.
  2. Blocked Inbound & Outbound caller ID
  3. Hospitals, schools, etc.
  4. Emergency services.
  5. Fraud, scammer & crooks, etc.
  6. Government offices,
  7. Support groups
  8. Etc., etc.

Out of interest, I did a check of the two mobile accounts that I have for the period Aug. 16 - Sept. 15.

Inbound & outbound local calls: 145    Unknown number: 86   |   There were 51 Wi-Fi calls. Only 8 of these calls had a known number show up.

LD calls - 19   Unknown number: 0   | There were 12 Wi-Fi calls.  All 12 calls had a known number show up.

There were 24 text messages during this same period & unknown volume of iMessages that do not show up.

Take care.
