I received a text about being over billed for $150 and to deposit the amount in my account. I’ve only been with bell a few months. This is obviously a phish text right?

Good Day.

Thank you for sharing this with the members of the Bell  Community Forum.

Education and awareness is the first line of defense against fraud and scam attempts.

One of the most common types of scam attempts we all face is phishing.

Phishing can come in the form of email, text messages - known as smishing, phone calls - known as vishing, or even gaming and social media platforms.

Phishing attempts play on emotions; such as fear, urgency, curiosity, and helpfulness to convince a target to take action. Very often they are related to tax season, banking, bills/invoices, computer problems, local or worldly events and conflicts.

Common telltale signs of a phishing attempt to look out for are:

  • The sender is not known or trusted
  • They are asking for personal information or information they should already have
  • Logos don’t look right or there are spelling and grammar errors
  • There is a sense of urgency
  • Suspicious and mismatched email domains, links or attachments
  • Promises of large sums of money or offers if you invest or pay

If you suspect you may have received a phishing attempt the first thing you should do is be realistic – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Make sure you do not respond to requests for personal information and be wary of alarmist or urgent requests. Do not click or open any links or attachments. Immediately report the message and sender via the appropriate channels based upon the platform and block the sender if possible.

If you receive a phishing email you should report it to Phish@bell.ca then delete the email.

If you receive a smishing text you should forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) then delete the text.

If you receive spam through Bell Webmail:

  • Click "Mark as spam". This will ensure the team managing Bell email services will note this so they can investigate and block it.
  • Send a copy of that email to abuse@bell.ca
  • Delete the email immediately after

If you believe you have been a target of any type of fraud, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

And here's another scam just in today on SMS

Checked it on a secure browser where you end up on a very official Bell-looking page which tells you that there was an overcharge in the June 2024 billing which can be claimed by clicking the "Claim Refund" button. --DON'T--

The real clue that this isn't a Bell site is that none of the sub-menu clicks, like TV, Internet, Mobility, etc work  but it sure looks real and if you believed in such a thing as Bell giving you $$$ you might be inclined to hit that claim button.

phisher had the correct first numerals of my account, correct billing date, and near identical layout of the official Bell communique. The sender was ***********@yourlink.ca

I forwarded the following to my 407.ca account:

Hello:

As noted in my web site  link to my 407 account information, this is being reported to you.

The attached is a photo of a “text message -SMS” sent to my wife today at her mobile #############. The number which you have on my profileIMG_1526.jpg

This text is a response to a previous similar text message which she deleted and reported as junk. She has done this with this response message as deleted and report as junk.

Is it possible for them to be advised of her first deleted message?

Thanking you,

Regards,

JK_PS

Rec’d a text with the Interac logo saying Bell is sending me $67 and click on the link I do believe it’s a scam

Good Day & Welcome to the Bell Community Forum.

Scam! You are absolutely correct! Bell does not e-Transfer funds. They would never send you a message advising you about your credit card or your banking information being expired, needing updating, payment, or having a refund notification that you need to provide details about.

If you are entitled to a refund, it will show up on your account as a credit & will be applied to your current or next bill.

Phishing can come in the form of email, text messages - known as smishing, phone calls - known as vishing, or even gaming and social media platforms.

Beware of phishing & malware. Report as junk & delete. Never open a link in any Email or send vital information!

If you receive a phishing email you should report it to Phish@bell.ca then delete the email.

If you receive a smishing text you should forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) then delete the text.

If you receive spam through Bell Webmail:

  • Click "Mark as spam". This will ensure the team managing Bell email services will note this to investigate and block it.
  • Send a copy of that email to abuse@bell.ca
  • Delete the email immediately after
