Recordings will now expire after 60 days

If I have recordings older than 365 days, (or more than 320 hours), will they all suddenly disappear?

This is a drastic change that most people probably don’t know about.
TV isn’t essential of course, but I still have some old stuff I’d like to watch.

I will probably try to do the same, and if they do not accept switching back to the old 4k box I will switch.

How was the price change?

This is just an Update for everybody: I was able to get the older 4K receiver as well without any extra charge. I am in Ontario too.

Yah love how they are shortening a service very significantly and now charging us $3.50 a month more.

How is it acceptable that at the time I signed my contract with Bell they specifically noted we could keep recordings for 365 days. How can Bell change "policy" (ie: breach contract) and get away with it?  The PVR already has a 320 hour limit - why do they need to further curtail with a 60 day retention?  Your answer above is not acceptable Bell. There are many shows not "on demand"...

Time to negotiate the price AGAIN hehe. I received the notification in Dec.

I meant to ask if switching to the older box would have additional increase. And the older box has drawbacks too. It's much more clumsier and lacks any function that an Android TV box has except the time-limited Christmas app. Since the 2016 release it's gonna be 8 yrs old this year and it's all refurbished. I remember in 2021 when.I had my first 5662 box after the Winter Sales, it breaks down right in the middle of the Toronto Christmas Parade premiere, so my recording was broken into two parts with the middle missing. Luckily it was on Crave without any watermark and ads for that year lol. However, one year later, recordings could be saved even if the 5662 box was turned off. It also indicates Bell could technically possible to put the 60-day cap on the older box too. What's more, I could at most record  around 292 hrs, far away from the advertised 320h while 7802 could go beyond 300 hrs. Additionally, recently I heard from a forum user that the 5662 box could only record four channels simultaneously instead of six, while the 7802 could record ten. https://forum.bell.ca/t5/TV/VIP7802-audio-video-glitching/td-p/10144/page/2

It could mean outside the dvr at the moment. I have recordings from last July and they are still on the DVR.

I agree that 5662w is not as responsive as 7802 in some cases, but it is much more responsive when fast-forwarding and rewinding the recorded show. FF and rewinding on 7802 are a real pain. I also just tried, and I was able to record 6 channels at the same time on 5662. Plus, I feel like the picture quality on 5662 is better than 7802. Ultimately, I believe 7802 is not even a conventional Google TV. Many apps, including Apple TV+ and VPN apps, cannot be installed on it; it is just a receiver that can have some of the apps.

Yes, Bell can impose a 60-day cap or any other limitation, but the point of switching back is to show them that they cannot do anything they want without considering the customers' needs and. satisfaction. If they remove the 60-day cap, I consider switching to 7802 again.

60 days is not long enough.  When I changed providers in 2022, I had 1 year.  Not all programs are on demand.  I really regret changing over to Bell.  Leave it to the big conglomerate to change the rules when ever they want.  Terrible service!  Now I have to start looking all over again.

I'm sure they have something in the fine print that allows them to do whatever they want when they want.

Yes it is clearly in the contract. They can change anything within the service with 60 days notice.

The only thing they can't change is terms cancellation fees discount during contract. What the CRTC and CCTC call critical information. There are a few other things that they can't change like CRTC mandated complaint process days in which you can cancel.

My guess on this on what I know about the industry is reducing licensing lengths to a standard max 60 days.

Hello Mr BellDRock (Community Manager),

Thanks for your contributed response in this very concerning discussion although it sounds like we don't have any choice in this matter?   A few questions to you :  Can I obtain a pre VIP7802 box that will help me retain my programs over 60 days?   How will my remote TV's work with the prior/older PVR boxes?  I've recently switched to Bell knowing I had a year to keep my programs, and I'm nowhere near my maximum limit; I delete old programs on a regular basis so I should be able to keep new ones for longer then 60days.  So based on this change that I have no control over, can I get out of my contract without penalty?  Or can I get a cheaper rate please!  I didn't sign up for this service, so I should be able to cancel and change providers now - without incurring additional costs.

Last questions :  Why is this happening?

From the simplified faq of terms on cancellation after a change

"Where required by applicable law:
 the notice of the change will describe the new or amended clause and the former version of the clause,
the effective date of the amendment, as well as your rights if you do not agree with the amendment; and
 if the change increases your obligations or reduces ours, you may refuse the amendment and cancel
the Agreement without penalty, by notifying us no later than 30 days after the effective date of the
amendment.
If you refuse the change, your remedy is to cancel the impacted Service or the Agreement (see Sections 55 and
56)"

My interpretation of this wording is we can refuse the change by cancelling the impacted service would be you could cancel the recording service which is 10 dollars per month. You can refuse by contacting.

I haven't bothered to check on details as I get it rebated for two years.

Remember that under the CRTC defined consumer rights you can follow bells escalation of concerns options and CRTC and CCTC as found in this bell support document.

https://support.bell.ca/how-to-resolve-a-concern

You also have the choice to cancell all services if you have other provider options and you may have cancellation fees.

I am just a consumer who knows my CRTC consumer rights very thoroughly and one who likes to provide the options and where to access information on these rights. I also read the terms very closely. They are pretty template across the industry although I can say 8 have never seen a change as significant as this reduction with the 4 companies I have received services from over the years.

As to why I haven't seen any requirement in the terms or with CRTC docs that they ever have to answer.

From my experience and knowledge, the most common reason for changes in recording on demand remote viewing etc lik in the negotiations and business side of digital rights management. We ultimately get whatever bell corporate decides to provide us which involves standard decisions of economic supply and demand and profit cost decisions by bell and the various media providers.

All the best if anyone decides to pursue their choices and rights.

Any tips on how to get switched to the older receiver? My complaint was escalated all the way up to the executive office and they're just telling me that it's not possible, that if I'm on the cloud receiver now there's no way to get the older 4K PVR. They're willing to waive my cancellation fee but that's about it.

Here is an update for everybody!

I just noticed even if you have a VIP5662w 4K box, all your recordings will be erased after 60 days! (Although the receiver recording page does not show that, if you check it on the Fibe TV app, you will see it) This is a new policy from Bell that affects everybody with all kinds of PVR! I just canceled my service with Bell!
